More often than not, I do DIY by myself. That is usually what I understand DIY to be defined as being.
If I'm feeling oddly like making some kind of Clapton wires I might use 24/26 awg for core wires, 34/36 for wrap.
A standard single strand wire build I might like using 26/28 awg wire.
Reckon it's subjective to what you desire doing.

@Jessica J Stewart the wire gauge can vary depending on your coiling tastes. The type of metal you use can also come into play. I'm stuck on simple Kanthal 24 ga. coils, as they produce stupid flavor in my SteamCraves, and hold up great over time, and the wire is stiff enough, that numerous re-wickings never cause them to deform.
