Hmmmm....I don't have an Orchid so I couldn't say for sure....anytime you you go for higher watts, lower ohms you can loose flavor though.....it's like an old fashion scale, you have flavor on one side and vapor on the other and trying to find the happy medium of balance is the tricky part. I am sorry to hear about your respiratory infection....four months ago at 30 years old I ended up in the hospital dying because I had three blood clots in my lungs both cutting off my wind pipe and blocking blood flow to my heart....the docs said I had to quit vaping but they also said the fact I made the switch probally helped keep me from dying...I feel for you and am glad you're better
I am sure you know this but for what it's worth....wicking is another thing too....too little cotton, to short of wick, too long of wick, or two much cotton can mess with the flavor of a coil....it's just one of those things you gotta play around with till you find the right balance. cotton's cheap, it's fun to watch it burn once in awhile...go threw lots.
how tight the coils are wrapped can play a part in it too...I made a post about making a hand wound flat wire clapton coil...I did it to try and get more flavor out of a 24 gauge single coil build on my Magma...when you wrap a coil like that though the downside is you're adding to a coils mass without increasing it's resistance so it takes a lot longer to ramp up.....wrapping another wire around the other wire or twisting them helps trap juice in the wire itself so the wire wicks more juice onto the metal and not just vapes the liquid it's touching on the wick....I prefer a cooler vape so I thought if I used a flat wire because it's so thin it might not change the ramp up that much and it's a hell of a lot easier to work with than 36 gauge kanthal....and I was wrong...even though it's like a .59 coil because it's only a single coil if I run less than 26 watts threw it it feels like it takes forever to heat up and the vapor and flavor is marginal....when I put it on my dna and run 27-32 watts threw it the thing has enough power hitting it to ramp it up fast and it cranks out vapor and the flavor is a little better than just the 24 gauge coil by itself but it sucks up juice like a son of a bitch. It's slightly cooler than just a 24 gauge micro at the same ohms but it's a little warmer than I like it but it takes longer to cool down because of the mass and so it keeps producing vapor after I let go of the button. The cool down helps balance it for me and IMHO the flavor is better even though it's a little warmer than I'd like it but all in all the coil was a fail so I am working on tweaking my idea.
Wire and cotton is cheap.....when I first started wrapping coils I was so horrible at it I bought a tube of Diamond brand "elegance" toothpicks. they're stronger than standard toothpicks and they are around 2.3 mm in diameter so I could wrap a coil around each toothpick and leave them in to keep my pathetic coils from distorting as I put them in the post holes of the atty. I since then have moved onto screwdrivers and drill bits now when I use thicker wire than 28 gauge but I still use them for thinner wires and give them to my friends to start working with....they're great for building coils for vertical coil builds like the Storm and Veritas too because they're so light they hold the coil well in place while trapping the leads and you can break them so they aren't sticking up in the way...
Sorry for ranting on your thread...I hope this helped a little and sorry if it didn't
