Hello all. very FNG here.

I want to start vaping. I am googling, and OMG, there are Soooooo many options and things to know, its mind boggling. I do not know anyone that vapes, I have very few friends. so I am hoping that you folks can send me in the right direction.

right now, I smoke menthol ultra lights. about 1/2 pack a day. I smoke 1/2 a cig at a time.
I can have a reg cig, but they are usually to strong for me.

As you are a light smoker, I'd just go for a Juul set up

They are closest thing to a smoke I ever tried and would not be too expensive if you are that light of a smoker

Best of luck in quitting cigarettes!

Welcome to VU!

I can't really recommend any particular hardware, as it has been a while since I started, and everything about vaping is constantly changing and improving... but many others will be able to help with that.

It sounds like your nicotine use is similar to what mine was, when I quit; I smoked for a long time, 39 yrs, but the last 20-ish of those was ultra-lights, and that made it challenging when I started, because the nimrods at the vape store told me that "everyone" starts at 18mg... which made me sick as a goat, and so did 12mg... I couldn't vape regularly until I got some 6mg eliquid. Just keep that in mind, if someone tells you some amount of nicotine that seems like a lot -- ultra-lights smokers usually can't handle nearly as much as lights or regular-strength smokers. The hardware is much more efficient now than in 2014, so 3mg might actually be where you should start.

what I am looking for :
1. to basicly copy the cig thing, give or take. at least for now = I'm sure you know how that goes.
2. reliability. ..yes, I know maintenance is a major issue.
3. cost... I am not looking to cheap out. but I don't want to spend double to get a minor improvement. initial investment and down the line usage. "Bang For Buck" is how I roll.
4. size ... Innokin Proton, ones like this are fine.

Juicy is right. I'd go with a juul. Simple no hassle. Charge and pop a pod in the top. Literally the closest thing to a cigarette.

As for cost... vaping is MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!! cheaper than smoking, at the moment for a lot of reasons but mainly because the gov't isn't yet making you pay as much in taxes as for the product itself... but also for a really excellent reason: your vape hardware isn't going to turn into stink and ashes. ;) The consumables of vaping can be expensive if you go all "store-bought" -- which naturally you do when you first start -- but once you get solidly into it, you'll find that the consumables can save you a lot of money, by building your own coils, and making your own ejuice. Literally, fractions of pennies compared to dollars.

I had my juul run over by a car or truck and lost in a parking lot for 5 days. Lost it at a job I was working at on a Friday and didn't make it back out there til Wednesday. Pulled the old pod and charged it up when I got home. Still kicking like a train. You can see where it was run over on asphalt. Lol

Innokin Proton is more than you need starting out. Take a look at the Innokin Kroma/ Zenith kit. Great reliable startup .

Welcome to VU and I hope you enjoy the journey as much as I have.

ok. I just put that up as a size thing. the brand, I don't want junk, but I don't need a Vette.

I want :
a "kit", I think ? = KISS, "Keep It Simple Stupid"(me). whatever spare parts and juice and whtever else I don't even know I should get.

I can't pick this stuff myself. idk much of anything about it. and I know if I were on my own I would waist a lot of money figuring it out.

how much are the pods for the Juul, and how long do they last ? (loaded question, but I have to ask). I think I could use one of those as a backup or in certain situations.

You can’t go wrong with Innokin. They make some of the best items in their class for longevity and durability.
If you want to mimic a cigarette though: make sure you’re getting the “MTL” kit (MOUTH TO LUNG), I believe it comes with the 1.6ohm coil.

The draw will very close to what you’re used to.

Ask all you want, that’s what we are all here for.
Most if not all of us are happy to help you find your way off the cigarettes .

My wife uses a Juul for work and gets about 3-4 days on a pod. It’s usually 4 pods for 15-16$

In my opinion the startup cost for a mod/tank kit is higher but the maintenance cost is cheaper.
-bear in mind, that’s also how many of us started down the rabbit hole of hobbyist.

15 bucks for a 4pack. I use other Vapes as well so just the pod I'm not sure. But mine last about a week. But I keep it in my pocket while I'm working so I don't have to walk all the way back to my work truck to get a vape

I wouldn't call it a hobby -- I vape in order to remain smoke-free, and that's the only reason. But I DO have a lot of mods, because I always want it to be easier to find something to vape with, than run to the store for cigarettes. My husband is so thrilled and delighted that a) I found a way to quit without losing my mind, b) it's a way that allows me to STAY quit, and c) 90% of all the money spent on vaping, I still have that hardware it was spent for -- I make my own coils and ejuice, so I don't spend much on consumables at all. I have a couple dozen mods, about 4-5 of which I use regularly, and 4-5 atomizers I like... It might look like a lot, but compared to the over $9-grand I would have spent on smoking in a bit over 4 1/2 yrs? I doubt I've spent even a third of that, on vape stuff.

And hey, I can play matchy-matchy with my mods and driptips and clothing... ;) (This is a bit older pic; I have a few others now... :D)

Vetted, yes.-to a degree.....

However, if you ask about them individually, you’ll get plenty of personal experiences.
My go to vendors in the USA are element vape, 101vape, my vapor store, local vape
Everyone has there own favorites.

My top brands for mods are:
LostVape, Innokin, minikin, vandyvape boxer and hexohm.
For attys:
528custom, recoil, flawless, psyclone, Kayfun, wotofo, vandyvape, Cthulhu and district5

*Most* stuff from Sigelei is pretty solid... though there are a few exceptions. Just ask round here, it's usually pretty well known which are good and which.. aren't. :D And Geekvape also makes some solid gear.

If you want to keep it simple an Innokin Zenith tank and an istick 30w (internal battery) or Pico 25 (external 18650 battery). There are good AIO kits but I know very little about them, I'll let others chime in on those.

ok, I'm back. I have been looking at a few of the online stores, myvapestore is one. maybe I am missing something, but it looks to me that those people have no clue as to how to get non vapers to start vaping. perhaps they make more $$$ this way, idk. but it is making me want to give up. starter kits = anything but.

Starter kits have become a general term for just “kit.” They have there place. No doubt that a few years back, all you had to start with was either an ego pen, or 12w mod with a clearimizer. Now, people start with some amazingly advanced gear.

If you go to the pod systems sub menu, under starter kits, you’ll see just pods.

Look at it this way. How much is it worth to you to stop slowly killing yourself with smoking cigarettes? I'm almost 40 with 5 kids that I'd like to see all of them graduate and do something. So it is worth every dime to me to quit smoking.

its not so much the money. I can buy the reasonably best gear. the problem = inexperience, and a zillion options.
I like the proton for its adjustability. but I have NO IDEA what is needed to make it do what I want.
what I want, for it to somewhat simulate the hit and taste of a mild menthol cig. some cherry flavor would be ok or even good, idk.

This, right here, is why I prefer mods and tanks over pods.
You have OPTIONS with a tank, that you just don’t get with MOST pod systems- the lost vape dna pod, is one of a few exceptions.

That zenith tank with a 1.6 ohm coil, will come closer than most, to imitating a cigarette.
Or an old standby, tried and true was the nautilus, you can get the proton mod and a nautilus tank...
The frustrating part is the amount of options out there, but that’s also the best part. You can have any vape you want ... it’s judt trying pinpoint the hardware to get it to you.
If you use only the power function and set your wattage to the wattage recommended on the coil(or near it) your vape will be the best and draw you want. The next piece of the puzzle is juice.... with an open system like that tank, you can use any juice you want....
if you want a cherry tobacco, take a look stat some of the pipe tobacco
Juices out there. I used to vape one from a company called PINKSPOT.

Been a smoker for 20 years, 3 packs a day (Marlboro Lights). Vaping is the best thing that happened in my life. Not only it made me stop smoking that cancer stick but it also make me crave less sugar so i now i drink my coffee with no sugar. Win-Win.

The only thing is that i'm vaping a lot since i switched. We're talking more than five 8ml tanks a day. This is making me consider switching to 6 mg nicotine hence i started right away with 3 mg....

If you're vaping that much of 3mg, then yeah, I think you'd find 6mg more satisfying. I started out at 6mg, because I was still smoking a little, transitioning, but once the butts were history, I gradually increased to 10mg and stayed there for a while.

LOL agreed.. Vaping alone is a lot cheaper than buying cigarettes. Its when it becomes a hobby that the $$$ start flowing outward. Currently, I have 6 batteries charging 3 at a time, 1 regulated mod, 1 tube mod that takes 18650 all the way up to 21700 batteries, and a paralled/ series-parallel mech mod (takes 2 or 4 cells) on its way. Plus of course spools of wire and my new daedalus coil tool. BUT.... It is STILL cheaper than smoking, even with all the bliing.

OK. You like the Proton for it's adjustability. Maybe you mean the interface?, because regulated mods in general, have adjustability.
For a screen/menu that's more than just numbers for settings you could also have a look at something like Modefined Draco or Smoant Naboo. 2 great products.
All 3 are dual 18650 which is way overkill for a MTL atty running at 12W or so, but you'll have battery reserve that will last a couple days if you vape as much as you currently smoke. And if you use a coil (or coils) or atty that needs more power you'll still have good battery life between charges.

I'd suggest the highly successful Aspire Nautilus Tank line, that has helped many a smoker quit. Including me, the first and only for the first 9 months.
They just came out with Nautilus 2S and I'd get that one. Can do MTL or more of a direct lung hit. 2 types of: coils, air flow, and tips. Actually, it comes with 2 coils, but there are a couple more that are compatible so you can find the one you like most. Between the coils, tips, air flow, and wattage adjustment, your apt to find a vape that you like and works.
https://www.aspirecig.com/aspire-tanks/nautilus/nautilus542.html

You'll need a couple batts and an external charger is recommended. Sony VCT6 or Samsung 30Q + Xtar VC4 will do nicely.

Or, you could get the 2S tank as a kit with the 50w Mod. Built in battery, smaller, more pocket friendly. Then when you get or decide on a dual battery mod you'll still have the 50 watter for when your charging batteries ,out and about on errands or whatever, and as a back up.

You can learn A LOT just by watching youtube videos alone. Easier to grasp the mechanics, etc through visual learning. Once you get a better understanding it will all start coming together in no time.

1) MTL and DTL vaping
2) MTL starter kits
3) DTL starter kits

And when you find a few you may be interested in, come back and ask the experts here. Plenty of the reviewers are flat out liars and will say good things about a mod, etc just to keep getting free stuff from said companies to review Or bad things about a mod because it only cost $30. Not to mention some reviewers will whine and cry about very irrelevant things.

You watch enough reviews you figure out who the tool-bag, whiney asses are.

Here's my suggestion:
.
The Aspire Nautilus AIO Kit is a pod style device that takes replaceable 1.8ohm aspire BVC coils.

https://www.aspirecig.com/aspire-kits/aspire-kits535.html

I would get this and some 25mg/ml - 30mg/ml nicotine salt eliquid of whatever flavor you think you will like.
