Injection #1 by Warren Ellis is like a somber and sickly humorous episode of The X-Files that slowly builds with the anticipation of all the strange just waiting to explode from under the surface. That said, this is no mere clone of the beloved television show. There’s a heady and emotional weight to this debut issue that introduces a world filled with unimaginable and probably terrifying wonders. Ellis takes his his time here, slowly introducing readers his new world and the characters who dwell within it. While these characters and concepts are rich with detail, it’s the details withheld that truly make this an intriguing first entry.

It’s clear that this world is not our world, and that the things that exist here are those of the horror, fantasy, and/or sci-fi genres. However, what is down to earth are the characters introduced by Ellis. These folks are all too real, and Ellis takes his time in slowly rolling out who these people are. We’re only given a small taste of their backgrounds and characteristics, but it’s just enough of an introduction that readers are able to sink their teeth into. There are also fun splashes of humor imbued within certain characters, and their reactions aren’t always what you might expect. The issue features some non-linear storytelling as well, so we’re introduced to many of these characters in two different emotional shades. One shade being much more upbeat and cheery than the other. Thus leaving readers with an interesting question: What broke them?
