Writer Brian Buccellato took over DC's Injustice comic midway through Year Three. Year Four could mark the point where Buccellato cuts loose and makes the series his own. But seeing as how the book has been getting along just fine these past few years, why fix what isn't broken? This issue doesn't attempt to shake up the familiar formula. Instead, it serves as a smooth transition from Year Three's magical war into new conflicts. In many ways, it's a return to basics for this universe.

The opening pages are a little clunky in their reliance on narration that serves no real purpose to the story beyond recapping past events for new readers. This is one of those cases where the captions could be completely eliminated with no adverse effect on the script. Luckily, Buccellato shifts away from narration quickly enough and emphasizes dialogue as he explores the state of various characters in the aftermath of Year Three. Superman undergoes the most dramatic shift, moving another step closer to the tyrant he is in the video game. Buccellato offsets that transition by placing a stronger emphasis on Wonder Woman. Diana has too often been downplayed in this storyline, but Year Four is shaping up to be her time to shine.
