Woody Allen almost gets away with it. Irrational Man is 2015’s entry into the director’s yearly routine of releasing a film (it’s also his 50th movie he’s directed). And the plot does feel a little bit like going through the motions. A brilliant man (Joaquin Phoenix) tries not to fall for a much younger woman (Emma Stone), but he does, and his life unravels. I suppose the narrative twist is that his life unravels because of other choices, not because of his coupling. Irrational Man is a light soufflé that is intermittingly enjoyable and impeccably performed, but it’s done in by Allen’s lazy pen.

Writing and directing 50 films isn’t lazy, but Irrational Man, perhaps more than any other Allen film, suffers from the overall feeling that it's Allen just finishing his yearly routine of making a movie. It’s a shame because Phoenix, Stone, and Parker Posey are all in top form.
