Debuting on BBC America this Saturday --though you can watch it on YouTube now -- following its UK premiere last month, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a period drama with a big twist. Set in the early 19th century, the series – like the book it’s based on – exists in an alternate history where magic is accepted as real, even though it’s rarely used.
In the series, magician Gilbert Norrell (Ray Donovan's Eddie Marsan) is sent to London to help in the war against France, encountering Jonathan Strange (the Tony Award-nominated Bertie Carvel), a novice in the study of magic who is told he is meant for great things. I spoke to Carvel and Charlotte Riley (Edge of Tomorrow), who plays Strange’s wife, Arabella, about the show’s intriguing scenario and what drew them to the story.
