Juice smells great, but not much taste.

I'm extremely new to vaping, only a few of weeks to be exact. I jump in to everything head first. I have already been playing with DIY juice. I haven't really mixed much that I really like. I know being a noob that I should be following some recipes, but I'm not built that way. I have made a couple of versions of a flavor that I'm looking to create. The second mix smells really close to what I'm looking for. The problem is there's not much taste to it.

Can I just add more flavoring in the current ratio to get the taste to show up? I'm already at 15% flavor.

Is that 15% single, or multiple flavors?
It would really help us to know more about what you're trying to mix, and the % of each flavor

Its multiple flavors. I didn't post the flavor because it seems to be a regional flavor that many won't know. It's Blue Moon Ice Cream. No one really knows what's in it. I make a mixed drink that tastes like it. Its equal parts Bailys Irish Cream, Amaretto and Blue Curacao(Blue Triple Sec). So that's the basis of my recipe.

Amaretto CAP 3%
Irish Cream CAP 5%
Citrus Mix FA 6%
Whipped Cream FW 1%

How dedicated are you to getting a vape that tastes like your mixed drink? I can help you do it with all FlavourArt flavorings. Their Irish Cream is a great Baileys flavor. this is amaretto disaronno: http://vapingunderground.com/threads/hics-amaretto-disoranno.1848/. And a triple sec would use orange, mandarin, bergamot (brandy optional for a boozy kick), or strip out the cream from this grand marnier: http://vapingunderground.com/threads/hics-grand-marnier-mousse.10296/ . If you have or want to get the FA flavors, I'll happily make that a real recipe, because it sounds like one I'd like.

15% should be plenty if you're using a base that's mostly PG. However in a VG base it may be a bit muted until it steeps for a bit. I've had flavors that just seem dull and dreary but once they sit in the cupboard for a couple weeks they kick me in the face with flavor.

Listen to the Sensei @HeadInClouds! I've experimented with other flavors. However, FA is the best for two reasons. First, you only need small amounts to get good flavored juice. Second, I haven't found a FA flavor yet, that doesn't taste like the real thing.

I'm using a 70VG/30PG base. So, if I were to increase the PG to say 50/50 or maybe higher could I possibly get a sense for what the higher VG mix would taste like after steeping?

I'm not ready to buy all new flavor yet. I want to give what I have a chance. Like I said the smell is spot on with the drink. I'm really looking to duplicate the flavor of the Ice Cream not necessarily the drink. The drink has a very similar taste to the ice cream without the alcohol taste. I know the citrus and amaretto flavor are correct, but the Irish cream is more for the drink not really for the ice cream. I really should probably be substituting the Irish Cream for more of a vanilla custard type flavor.

i think you should read HiC's comprehensive notes on flavor because what you smell is not necessarily what you're going to taste. Strawberry flavors may smell the same but are a world of difference. Same with creams and anything else for that matter. You can adjust till your adjuster falls off, but that doesn't mean you're gonna hit the Mark. because a combination of flavors sound good doesn't mean they actually work.

Imho...I would take HiC up on his offer. How cool and what a honor to have him craft a personal recipe! I've been seductively smiling, batting eyelashes, winking @HeadInClouds
and he hasn't crafted me a recipe! I did get a consolation cookie and novelty gift set!!

That could help but changing the base mix can effect the flavor so it will be off a bit.

Use a warm water bath while shaking the bottle periodically to help expedite the process with your VG base and see if you can get anything out of it then.

As a new member to VU and Vaping in general, I was not aware of the prestigious status that HIC holds. From some of the comments that I have received from other member this sounds like a an opportunity that I can not pass up.

So that being said, what do I need purchase and do so that we can get this collaboration under way?

I'm looking forward to learning, while at the same time unlocking this obscure classic mid-western flavor.

@gofastonit , this is the part of your description that I glommed onto:
I make a mixed drink that tastes like it. Its equal parts Bailys Irish Cream, Amaretto and Blue Curacao(Blue Triple Sec).

FlavourArt can make that just right, for sure. Let me mix that, tweak it, and I'll post it here with as detailed a description of the flavor as I can manage.

IF those 3 actual beverages combined taste like your ice cream, all's well (I've never seen or tasted that ice cream). BUT, for the ice cream, Google shows shocking-Smurf-blue rasp-lemon-vanilla-marshmallow stuff -- no almond (amaretto), no Irish Cream, and no orange at all. I'm dubious that the mixed drink could taste like that. This was interesting to read for a possible explanation: http://whoonew.com/2013/07/blue-moon-ice-cream/ . So it's a secret flavor combo, and those 3 alcohol flavors mimic it well?

There are a few wildly different cocktails called Blue Moon, usually gin-based, some with pineapple/orange -- the original with creme de violette, like this: http://www.creative-culinary.com/the-blue-moon-cocktail/ (I actually posted a recipe for that at the last astronomical 'blue moon' - but clearly it's radically different from everything else here.) Too many Blue Moons, so I'm going with your original description of the drink first. Give me a day or two to make it tasty...

I have Googled Blue Moon Ice Cream and have read all the descriptions. There is no raspberry in it. A lot of the descriptions say raspberry, as well as, pineapple both I believe to be incorrect. No one mentions the almond, which I guarantee it has. Most people that describe the ice cream almost always say "I had it when I was a kid when we lived in MI, OH, IN, WI , blah blah blah". Therefore they are total going off an old memory. I can drive 2 miles down the road and buy a half gallon at Meijer right now.

As for the cocktail, Irish Cream gives the cocktail a cream base for a actual drink. I'm positive no one will describe Blue Moon Ice cream using Irish Cream. The cocktail I have described mimics the Ice cream closer than anything I have ever had.

Description on the Ice Cream from Meijer:
"Blue vanilla ice cream with custard, citrus and spice flavors. Artificial flavor added. Creamy and delicious ice cream."

Maybe swap the Irish Cream with Vanilla ice cream with custard.

If I put all these clues together, plus the "smells just right" from your post #3, then there's something you can do to be sure we're on the right track: mix equal quantities of Amaretto Disaronno and triple sec (you use DeKuyper Blue Curaçao, right?) with cream. If THAT tastes to you like a boozy version of your ice cream, a non-boozy vape equivalent is easy -- so, would you do that?

I found others who guess at amaretto in Blue Moon ice cream! Bitter-almond (the characteristic part of amaretto) gives many people the flavor-illusion of cherry, which isn't a huge leap away from raspberry. There may well be raspberry flavoring in that ice cream, but it tastes like almond to you. Or it may be actually bitter-almond, and it gives most other people the impression of raspberry. The best way to know for sure if I'm interpreting YOUR description right is to mix that drink and see how it compares.

I mixed the all-FlavourArt equivalent of your post #3. It had definite flavors of coffee-whiskey-chocolate from the Irish Cream. I set that aside as one I enjoy enough to vape, but it's sure not your Blue Moon ice cream. Next I replaced Irish Cream with flavors for a custard-y vanilla ice cream instead, like you mentioned, combined equally with my amaretto and triple sec mini-recipes, adjusted it for max sweetness and no booziness. I hope your cocktail does indeed taste right to you, because you'll sure like the way FA does amaretto + triple sec.

If anyone else knows that actual ice cream, I'm vaping this as a first-guess (all FA): 1% each Custard, Vanilla Tahiti, Catalan Cream, Vienna Cream, and Orange, plus 0.5% each Mandarin, Marzipan, Marshmallow, and Torrone. If you combined amaretto, generic triple sec, and cream, de-boozified and sweetened it some, that's what it tastes like. I'll happily vape these little experiment bottles until I hear more...

edit later: a tank later, and I can see where people would get the impression of pineapple from this combo. Could just be my imagination...

The wife and I will be headed out to the store this evening. I'll will absolutely pick up the ingredients to make the drink. What kind of cream are we talking about (Whipping Cream, Heavy Whipping Cream, Half and Half. etc...)?

Half and half is what I'd use, nothing too heavy.

I'm still doing my homework. I bought booze and a few other things. I have been drinking, mixing and cooking for a couple of days. I'll report results hopefully tomorrow.

HIC.... What's the verdict on the flavor that you currently have?

My opinion's irrelevant. I like what I've vaped, and it tastes like I expect it to, but the point is to figure out a match for your flavor. Keep enjoying that ice cream and cocktails, seeing how they compare. Since you lack the FA, and I lack the ice cream, it gives us a common reference point.

OK, my homework is complete.
Materials used include:
Heavy Whipping Cream
Irish Cream Liquor
Triple Sec
Homemade Custard Sauce (milk, sugar, egg and vanilla)
Orange Flavor extract
Almond Extract
blue moon ice cream

I started with the cocktail by using Whipping Cream instead of Irish Cream Liquor. After many mixtures, I ended up with 4.5Tbls Cream, 1 3/4tsp of Triple Sec, 1 tsp of Amaretto, 1/4tsp of Vanilla Extract and 1/2tsp of sugar. When taste tested next to liquefied blue moon, something was still not right. The booziness taste was not helping.

Next I made a homemade batch of a custard sauce. I believe that was the taste that was missing. Again after many mixtures, I ended up with 4Tbls of custard sauce, 1/4tsp almond extract, 1/8tsp orange extract, 1tsp of whip cream, 1/8 tsp. of vanilla extract. When this concoction was tasted side by side with the liquid ice cream it was close enough for me. Could have maybe used a little more custard vanilla creaminess. But that where my research ended.

In conclusion. I have found that the cocktail wasn't as close to the ice cream as I had thought. The similarities are definitely there. Who goes out for cocktail's and ice cream anyway. What I did find was the vanilla custard was definitely the missing link and a very important flavor of the ice cream.

So HIC, what are you thoughts? Do you think this impacts the recipe that you have already posted?

So HIC, what are you thoughts? Do you think this impacts the recipe that you have already posted?

These are the FA flavors I had:
Custard, Vanilla Tahiti, Catalan Cream, Vienna Cream, and Orange, plus 0.5% each Mandarin, Marzipan, Marshmallow, and Torrone

Versus your ingredients:
4Tbls of custard sauce, 1/4tsp almond extract, 1/8tsp orange extract, 1tsp of whip cream, 1/8 tsp. of vanilla extract. When this concoction was tasted side by side with the liquid ice cream it was close enough for me. Could have maybe used a little more custard vanilla creaminess.

Translating your ingredients directly into flavorings, it's FA Custard, Almond, Orange, Fresh Cream, and Vanilla Classic. But I still think the other flavorings I used will make it more appealing. Getting enough sweetness will be really important. I'd skip Fresh Cream completely because it's not sweet - and let Custard, Catalan Cream, and Vienna Cream do that work. FA Custard IS that custard you made, but with lemon added. Some combo of Custard-Catalan-Vienna will work, but you might want more Custard and less of the other two. The biggest question mark for me is which almond flavorings will do best for you. FA Almond smells like almond extract but isn't prominent in recipes; when you use enough for strong flavor, it tastes more like actual nuts or almond meal. FA Marzipan is extra sweet, very like amaretto, and stands out in a recipe. I'm confident it has a place here, for the sweetness if not the impression of amaretto. Torrone has sharp citrus notes, also quite sweet - you might omit this (because of the sharp citrus) and use Almond instead. If you include Marzipan, you probably want the Mandarin in there to help prop up the orange flavor. I used Marshmallow for the extra sweetness and to smooth Marzipan, so I'd suggest keeping that. FA Vanilla Tahiti is a cherry-almondy vanilla, the sweetest they make - but FA Vanilla Classic is more like generic vanilla extract in a typical kitchen. so...I'd add Vanilla Classic and Almond to the list, and perhaps omit Vanilla Tahiti and Torrone, so you end up wanting: Almond, Catalan Cream, Custard, Mandarin, Marshmallow, Marzipan, Orange, Vanilla classic, Vienna Cream. If there's one you might not need in that list, it's Mandarin.

Let me mix this and see if it tastes good!

Last week I ordered everything you had in the first recipe. I have received all the flavors on Sat. except for the two that Bull City was out of. The Marshmallow and Orange should be here today. I will mix it your first way and see what I think and wait to here back on the new mix.
BTW... What PG/VG/ Nic juice do you mix?

Because it's an ice cream flavor, the sweeter and smoother the better, so the more VG the better. I use max-VG.

Hey, I found someone who agrees with your orange-almond description: http://www.withsprinklesontop.net/?p=1962 I also found someone who claims it's simply almond with nutmeg - that's a long way from rasp-lemon.

In attempting to match your custard concoction, I have 1.5% Custard, 1% each of Vanilla Classic, Almond, Marzipan, Orange, Vienna, Catalan Cream, and 0.5% each Mandarin and Marshmallow. If your custard sauce was on the right track, this FA combo and the earlier one should both be encouragingly familiar flavor. The smoother almond-marzipan I have now (instead of torrone-marzipan) is a good step for smoother results. The vanilla swap didn't make a big difference. I'm curious whether you'll decide the Mandarin does/doesn't belong...
