Just got some Nichrome - suggestions?

I ordered some Nichrome 80, 24 Ga and 38 Ga with the idea of making some Claptons. Any ideas? I've never used Nichrome before, steam engine wire wizard models a dual coil of 24/38 Ga claptons wrapped 9 times on a 2.5mm to come in at about .3 ohms.
Suggestions? These are the only gauges of Nichrome I have in my arsenal.

What you have in mind could be pretty good. I've never tried an all-nichrome clapton. I imagine it gets pretty hot. I'd probably shoot for a .35 on my first go with it.

You might want to play with the nichrome on its own, just to get a feel for its unique heating properties.

I like to mix my nichrome claptons with kanthal, personally. Nichrome core, kanthal outside. I use nichrome as the core because it heats up faster than kanthal, so it makes for a snappier clapton. 24ni/32k works pretty well for me. You could even wrap 30g kanthal or maybe even 28g kanthal around the outside. You could also do it the other way around with something like a 26k/38ni.

Either way, it'll read low before you oxidize it, but the rule still applies: claptons will usually ohm-out about the same as the core wire. Whatever you put on the outside is mostly just a heat sink.

If you have a high-wattage regulated device, then you could run as high as .5, though I'd recommend something between .3 and .2 for a mech.

I'm running dual NiC80 claptons right now. Comes out to about 0.3 ohms with 7 wraps and a 3mm ID. Its a 24 AGW core with 32 AGW wraps. It is pretty hot at 100w. Ramps in no time at all though. I like it better than Kanthal wraps. The flavor is cleaner to me.

Thanks for your advice Humans! Much appreciated.
That 38 Ga is so fine it's almost impossible to work with.

It take offense to that, sir. I'd thank you to be more considerate of my kind in the future.

But yeah, it's almost as fine as a single human hair. I'm betting it's harder to work with than 38g kanthal, as nichrome is softer.

You could try using a wooden clothespin with little indentations carved out of or drilled into the tip as a guide to feed the wire through.

Another thing I've seen done that works well enough if you can keep tension on the wire coming out of the spool (protip: neodynium magnets as a clamp over the wire side and the inside of the roll and/or right behind where you hold the wire,) is to use a gutted old clearo head as a guide... ...the ones with a line cut across the middle the of the 510 end work nicely as they have a guide to help keep it in place as you advance it down the length of the core.

If you use DIY juice you can also try a blunt tip needle. Tension on the inner wire is important with this method.

So I spun up some Clapton wire - 24 Ga Nichrome 80 core with a 32 Ga Kanthal wrap. Gonna wrap a set of coils with it soon.
One question for you helpful Humans (and former humans); my coils always make a frightening popping sound when I vape. Why is that? Sometimes I get a nice hot spit back too. Yeech.
Am I doing something wrong or is this normal. I'm using a coiling jig and so I'm not torching my coils anymore. Would torching help?

I have never been human. I was activated in the year 2050 and became a zombie after my manufacture date. It's kind of a long story. I don't want to bore you with details. ANYWAY...

Torching only makes them easier to wrap. They always crackle and spit, especially when they're fresh. Claptons have self-wicking properties. The juice that collects inside the tiny spaces between the core and the outer wraps heats up and expands rapidly, so it's going to fizzle and pop. They should mellow out significantly after a brief break-in period. Give the gunk time to fill that gap and I think you'll find the coil gets much more agreeable.

I'm an avid coffee drinker/addict so my tongue is used to being burnt. The spit back really doesn't bother me as such. However, claptons generally spit back quite a bit. A 510 driptip will alleviate it a bit. If you prefer chuffs or widebore you're SOL.

Also, I take offense to that. I'm a cardassian. We aren't even mammals.

Wrapped some coils tonight, thanks for the suggestions folks. Dual coils 7/8 wraps 2.5 mm 24 Ga Nichrome w/32 Ga Kanthal Clapton coming in at .25 ohms in the Velocity clone. Vapes nice.
