What you have in mind could be pretty good. I've never tried an all-nichrome clapton. I imagine it gets pretty hot. I'd probably shoot for a .35 on my first go with it.
You might want to play with the nichrome on its own, just to get a feel for its unique heating properties.
I like to mix my nichrome claptons with kanthal, personally. Nichrome core, kanthal outside. I use nichrome as the core because it heats up faster than kanthal, so it makes for a snappier clapton. 24ni/32k works pretty well for me. You could even wrap 30g kanthal or maybe even 28g kanthal around the outside. You could also do it the other way around with something like a 26k/38ni.
Either way, it'll read low before you oxidize it, but the rule still applies: claptons will usually ohm-out about the same as the core wire. Whatever you put on the outside is mostly just a heat sink.
If you have a high-wattage regulated device, then you could run as high as .5, though I'd recommend something between .3 and .2 for a mech.
