"The Darkseid War" isn't an event comic in any traditional sense of the phrase. It's a self-contained story unfolding in a long-running DC series, and it has no tie-ins of any kind (that DC has announced, anyway). In some ways, this is merely business as usual for writer Geoff Johns and artist Jason Fabok. However, in terms of the scope of this story and the impact it promises to have on the DCU, The Darkseid War feels very event-worthy. If Convergence left you cold, this story may be the boost of adrenaline you've been waiting for.

Though this issue marks the official start of this new storyline, it builds directly on setup from Justice League #40 and the FCBD issue Divergence #1. Both are recommended reading in order to fully appreciate the events of this issue. It quickly becomes clear that Johns is bringing many running plot threads to bear with The Darkseid War, from Forever Evil to Lex Luthor's apparent reform to the League's original battle with Darkseid in the earliest issues of the series. This reads like the climax of Johns' entire Justice League run, and it could very well end up being that. At the very least, The Darkseid War is shaping up to be the proper finale to the New 52 era that Convergence wasn't.
