Justice League: Gods and Monsters is easily one of the most intriguing projects to spring from DC's direct-to-DVD animated movie department, both because it brings Bruce Timm back to the fold and because it features a completely original story for a change. Unsurprisingly, DC is releasing a comic book tie-in that further expands this alternate DC Universe and its unusual heroes. This first issue serves as a memorable look at Gods and Monster's Batman, even if it never fully lives up to its potential.

In the Gods and Monsters universe, Batman is Kirk Langstrom rather than Bruce Wayne. This issue explores Kirk's early months as a vigilante, driven more by a vampiric bloodlust than a sense of justice. Writer J.M. DeMatteis frames the story as a dark noir, with all the violence, torment and inevitable tragedy you'd expect. DeMatteis does a great job of showcasing just how different this version of Batman is. He's selfish and brutal, but not without his sympathetic qualities. Along the way, there are various clever twists on the familiar Batman formula.
