Over the years, our pal Kirby has eaten a lot of strange things. The pink puffball has devoured countless enemies and elements, all sorts of foodstuffs, entire trees, every character in Smash Bros, and more. But you know what he hasn't eaten? A whole working automobile.

Until now.

During today's Nintendo Direct, we saw a new look at Kirby and the Forgotten Land, with the introduction of a new mechanic called Mouthful Mode. In this mode, Kirby gets a very literal mouthful of a super large object, gaining its powers. In the trailer we see examples like a vending machine, a traffic cone, a scissor-lift, and yes, an entire car.

The internet has gone predictably nuts over "Carby."

Even the Nebraska Humane Society is getting in on the fun.

We’re animal experts! Show us a photo and we’ll tell you whether it’s an animal or just kirby eating a car

What is it about Carby that we all love so much? It's hard to say exactly. It may be partly the sheer size of the lad; a lot of Nintendo and Nintendo-adjacent games (Pokemon Legends: Arceus and Bowser's Fury come to mind) have been making their characters large lately to all of our delight. Also, look at him! Look at his goofy shape! Come on, Kirby, why would you swallow a whole car?

Most notably, people tweeting about Carby seem largely disappointed that Nintendo did not, in fact, officially name him Carby when in this form. It's just called Mouthful Mode, and the car version doesn't have its own name. That's okay though. He's Carby in all of our hearts.

Today's Direct was absolutely stacked with news, including the announcement of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC, the official reveal (finally) of a Chrono Cross remaster, the reveal of Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings coming to Nintendo Switch Online, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 getting announced. You can catch up on all the news with our full recap.
