Let’s get out of the way that it’s a bit tricky to review Mad Men’s final season. The decision to split the season into two halves, that aired a year apart, meant Matthew Weiner pretty distinctly split the story as well – the time jump to 1970 alone making the final batch of episodes feel like their own season.

That being said, the fourteen episodes that aired in 2014 and 2015 do comprise “Season 7”, so that’s all being taken into account when looking at how Mad Men’s story wrapped up. And overall, it was a strong ending to be sure.

By Season 6 of Mad Men, one issue the series faced was how repetitive Don’s actions had become. This was intentional, but still a bit of a slog a times, as he repeated all of the same mistakes from the past. Season 7 though found Don in a very different place for much of it – beginning on a forced “hiatus” from SC&P, and trying (and failing) to save his disintegrating marriage with Megan. His eventual return to the company was fascinating, showing how awkward it was for the former MVP to now be answering to the likes of Lou, while navigating an often hostile new dynamic with his former protégé, Peggy.
