The penultimate episode of Mad Men sure threw some curve balls at us, huh?
I’ll admit to being very nervous when it became clear Betty was sick - really sick. Because it’s easy to imagine a show throwing in something like this at such a late point and it derailing everything or becoming overly, artificially emotional in the process. But what really made Betty’s terminal illness work was, well, Betty.
It’s hard not to wonder see Betty actually dying (or at least finding out she will die soon) as a bit of a meta reflection by Matt Weiner, taking a character many hated and even said they wished she would die and actually saying, “Okay, this is how that would go.” Betty can be so cold and harsh, which is kind of the whole point as far as who she is and the armor she wears – and made it ultimately very poignant when she handled finding out she would die soon in such a practical, seemingly emotionless way.
