Marvel Zombies #1 is terrific in so many ways. Si Spurrier writes Elsa Bloodstone as a fascinating lead character for the story. Kev Walker is an excellent artist, excelling particularly in the expressiveness of his characters. The creativity between the two creators results in terrifying monsters. But all those incredible, individual parts don’t quite coalesce into something completely satisfying.

The issue primarily focuses on Elsa Bloodstone - the cheeky, badass daughter of Ulysses Bloodstone, “the greatest monster hunter who ever lived”. Her father’s teachings have made her nearly unkillable, but also cold-hearted. Those traits emanate from her in the form of some terrifically scripted dry humor. She’s immediately compelling from her attitude and sympathetic from her backstory. It’s a backstory that is a bit clichéd at this point, a father who excessively and cruelly pushes his child at a young age, but the dialogue of Ulysses in these flashbacks is so sharp that it keeps the scene engaging the whole time.
