I'm in the market for a new mechanical mod. I have the istick 50w and a sigelei 150 box that I love. I just want a mech - vape addict here. I have been looking at a few clones because budget is tight right now... I originally wanted a full tugboat setup but I'm beginning o see that they'll put their logo on lots of stuff.

So, I've been looking into a SMPL, Manhattan v2, Apollo, fuhatten and the likes of those. Open to suggestions as well. I'd like to keep the whole setup under 50. When finances allow i plan on buying authentic if I like it...anybody have a clone mech they swear by? What about atty? Eventually I want more but for this I was deciding between the dark horse, dogev2, and mutation x v3

Ps-most of the previously mentioned mods drew me in with their pretty colors :)

This in advance

FUhattan is a sturdy workhorse of a mod, and the copper one hits hard. Copper is a high maintenance material tho. SMPL comes with a hybrid 510 connection, so you may not be able to use all attys with it. Button can be a bit crunchy first. Hits stupidly well even with an SS tube, right there with the FUhattan.

I would buy a brass Rig Mod. Great mod, built like a tank.

Or a Caravela. Old, legendary mod with a glorious fire button.

since you didn't get a lot of responses, I'll throw my hat in the ring for a good nemesis clone. with a little fiddling with it, it can be the workhorse that will perform every time.

I second the nemisis mod. Its a great starter mod that can fit just about every battery and atty combo you can think of. I have about 10 mech and the ones that get used every day are a brass and copper nemmys with tugboat v2s on them. I have never had a problem with either of them and I recently changed the switches to magnets and they are super smooth now.

I have a smpl authentic and a clone. I can tell you that the clone works just as well. The only difference being that the clone is NOT a single piece of brass as advertised. I would however spend the money again on the authentic, for a mech mod it's very fairly priced. They also just released a version 2 last month with a rhodium plated firing switch. If you're insistent on buying a clone-the smpl is not a bad choice, though i believe in supporting the people who put the time into designing these things personally. Good luck on your search!

I have a SS Nemesis clone, 1 Kepler Carbon Fiber Stingray X clone, 1 Kepler SS Stingray X clone, original Ragnarok full copper, and the Fuhattan. All have a magnetic switch. My 2 Stingrays hit as hard as the Fuhattan, and Ragnarok, due to full copper tubes. With the Stingrays, I don't have to fiddle with the pin, when changing the RDA, as I have to with the Nemesis, Ragnarok, and Fuhattan. Therefore, the 2 Stingrays are my goto mech mods.
As for RDAs, I'd go with either Doge V2, CLT V3, or a Mutation X V3. As much as I like the Dark Horse, it's lacking a deep juice well.

I think the rig would be a little heavy for a lady. I've tried one and it's pretty intense

Appreciate all the feedback. And like I said in the original post- i plan on buying the authentic when possible. Most of what We already own is authentic which is why the vape budget doesn't allow for another.

A hybrid mech might not be a good first mech choice.... do some research if you decide to go that route.

I've had a Kamry K100, Nemesis, Stingray, Stingray X, 2 Caravelas, Penny, Paragon, and a couple others - all clones except the Kamry, which was junk.

Honestly, I keep coming back to the Nemesis - it's still my workhorse when I want something to bash around smaller than a regulated box. Simple to set up and use, works great with the magnets I just recently installed (after using it with the stock spring daily for 6+ months), all around a time-tested great starter or advanced setup. Nothing wrong with many others, I like my Stingray X for appearance and it normally comes with me for a night out, but I like the Nemmy. My wife loved her Caravela until I got her a Penny, then she loved that until she took my Paragon.

One thing I wouldn't recommend as a first mod is anything hybrid like a SMPL or 4Nine - too much risk of a short if an edge of the atty comes into contact with the battery, and my wife has had RDAs with center pins that would slide up - kaboom if that happened banging around in her purse with a hybrid.

EDIT: As far as atties go, the only one on your list I have experience with is the Mutation - I've loved both the V2 and V3, though I have to keep my coil legs a bit long and elevate the coil to get it in front of the air holes. Vaping a V3 at 60 watts right now on my Sig 100...

The Smpl is an excellent first mod. You have only ONE thing to think about, to make sure your contact pin on the atty protrudes out. Otherwise there is no fucking around with any adjustments like 510 pins, and fire buttons. It's a great 1st mech mod. This particular smpl from fasttech is very good. Smooth button, machined from one piece, bullet proof and 19 dollars delivered.

Well, it's great in that there's only one thing to screw up, and that you don't need to learn the basics of mech use in order to try it. It's not so great in that if you screw that one thing up you could cause an explosion and heinous injury to yourself and anyone so unfortunate as to happen to come into contact with you. #stronglydisagree

Duly noted. Cars and guns require registration, hence government regulation requiring we know how to use them - I prefer to envision a world where that never becomes a topic for mod ownership. If you want to continue this, start a new thread and @ me, I'll weigh in. Otherwise, back to OP's scheduled programming...

Require registration..lol wouldn't know it with 40,000 deaths a year with automobiles, and hundreds of accidental shootings. can't fix stupid.

Back on topic...
Forgot to mention, once you find the atty you want and you make sure the contact pin sits proud (98% of the attys out there), you have zero things to fiddle with on an smpl, which is what makes it a great first mod.

I disagree about the hybrid... a noobie is more likely to miss something... and on a hybrid and missing that your pos pin is too short, you have a dead short.

you are assuming that the OP is stupid. They are new not stupid. They should do research before buying. now if they did the research and still vent a battery, then they are stupid.

The OP seems bright enough to me.

For being as new as she says, sounds like she has done some research and it likely to do more before purchasing and using.

Just saying........................

Come on... I never said she was stupid. Dont put words in my mouth.

Trust me, no offence was meant.:(

And if I did offend, I offer you my most sincere apologies.

More to the point, and more along the lines I was actually thinking is that the OPs interested in branching out into a new (for her anyway) area of vaping, IE the noble Mech seems to me refreshingly different than a lot of post from new vapers that have done little or no research and want anykind of mech, topper and battery combo so they can enter cloud competitions immediately with no concern for the condition of their face or the welfare of anyone unlucky enough to be standing next to them.

Wow, that was a mouthful!

I feel like I should offer an apology to the OP, as I never intended to imply a lack of intelligence or thoughtful consideration of the options, though it seems to some others I certainly may have. My point was more along the lines of my own tendency to move gradually into new aspects of vaping...I did the same homework she's doing right now before getting into mech mods, decided against a hybrid top connector as my jumping-off point due to safety concerns, and had those concerns justified when a couple of the cheap RDAs I bought ended up having the pins slide up into the 510 threads on my wife's center-pin-equipped devices.

I would at least advise some active testing on whatever RDA she ends up with on a non-hybrid device for a little while, using her regulated box perhaps, just to make sure there are no pin issues. But my advice is worth exactly what it costs to read it...

As long as the op knows the details about using a hybrid type mod she'll be fine. There is no danger in a newbie using a hybrid mod. No way to learn unless you do it just don't make any mistakes.

Someone who belongs to a vape forum is far less likely to make the same mistake as some idiot who walks into a B&M for the first time and gets an Atlantis and 4nine clone so they can go blow massive clouds and post their awesome pics on facebook.

As for the OP, are we assuming you only want to use 18650's? If not, the Nemesis clone is a great place to start, you can configure all different sizes of batteries, kick compatible and lots of nice colors to choose from too. Stingray clone is also another one worth looking at as well.

I 2nd the Fuhatten. Thick Copper, good switch, low voltage drop off.

I love that shade of blue, is that the Tugboat mod, obviously Freakshow RDA. How do you like it? Sure looks nice. The Freakshow has some cool features, I just fear it being leaky. Congrats and I'd love your opinion. Damn I want that blue RDA,VaporDNA has em' I think.

So far I ️ it!!! It's a SMPL mod- and the freak show. So far no leaking but will keep you updated if it does.

The mech feels really solid. I don't love love the matte finish but I can live with it for now.

And as far as all the original discussion- I'm not terribly new to vaping and my SO has mechs. He will make sure I'm super safe with it. But no offense was taken either way! I'm pretty hard to offend anyway. But I want to assure everyone that I'm competent and can handle it!

I would have suggested a Tugboat V2 on top of a vanilla mod.

I have both the 18650 and the 26650.

I have a Nemesis too, and don't understand all the love for it. Mines ok, but my copper mods are better IMO.

My sole authentic is a copper Vanilla. I can't speak for the clones, but it's pretty incredible.

OP, I didn't realize the SMPL came in different colors. What is the actual metal on that one? I have enough mechs ATM, just bought my second regulated box, too, but I really dig the SMPL. My 4Nine clone sees the majority of my mech use, at least out and about, when I don't wanna take an authentic, or box. I'm all about the hybrid top caps. You seem like you've done your research, have good guidance, and respect the mech. Those hybrids can be troublesome with some batts and attys. just have to pay attention a bit more.

Not a fan of the button on the Nemmy. Prefer a button like a Vanilla.
Agreed, either recessed, flush, or manhattan/FUHattan style switches for me. I'm not a fan of needing to constantly lock my mod. The Vanilla is the best of both, I have my switch fully in, and never use the lock, but it's there if I need it. The SMPL is recessed with no locking ring, too, correct?

Correct. Spring loaded button on it. I'm not into locking mine all the time, so that was a factor in my decision.

I got it at a local b&m. Try to support local whenever possible especially with this type purchase. I'm 99% sure it's a clone by wofoto

Eciggity has them for 35 and the metal is copper. Hopefully won't have much trouble with the atty/battery. Bought a new Samsung INR for it and really enjoying the freakshow on it right now.

the SMPL has fragile magnets one drop they will shatter but you can replace them with a spring from homedepot easily, i speak from experiences lol

And I like my magnetic super smooth recessed buttons..... Agreed the nemesis is an OK mod except for that annoying locking ring needed because the button isn't recessed....I mean its like unlock, puff puff, relock...unlock, puff puff, relock, etc, etc...what a pain in the ass! And God forbid you forget to lock it and set it down upright.. Might even burn your damn house down left alone..lol
All my mechs have recessed buttons, they work great and are very safe standing them up, for me, and my whole household... just sayin
