Mech Mod

Ive been vaping for the better part of two years and now I'm looking into getting a mech mod (my Snowwolf is just a little big to have to take with me to work)

Normally I would ask my boyfriend for his opinion since we started our journey to quit smoking and start vaping together but he favors some companies and I don't think I'm getting a fair representation of what is available to me.

Im not looking to enter any sort of contest so I don't need anything too crazy. Just something simple that still packs some power. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

While a single 18650 battery will get close to the 80 watts you're using I would suggest a series or parallel mod so you can run more power.

I like my noisy cricket but the button, imo, is a piece of shit. I'm going to order the fat daddy upgrade for the better button and a true 510 connection. Still comes in pretty cheap.

Do you have any suggestions for mods to check out? I don't really understand what a series or parallel mod is. I feel like I know absolutely nothing even tho I've been vaping and building my own coils for years.

As you probably know, heyyniki, a mechanical mod is adjusted with the coil build. You can get plenty of vapor from a single 18650.

Are you interested in a tube or box style?

With mechs, it's all down to what kind of budget you have. Since you want something more portable, I'd go with a tube & with that you could be okay with a SMPL clone from Wotofo or Infinite or you could be okay with a Timekeeper clone from Kindbright off 3FVape. Or if you have some money, a Petri, VCM or a Roundhouse are good buys.

And if you've okay with dropping some scratch, a Rig, a Subzero Shorty or Able are worth checking out.

Skip the Cricket, dangerous piece of shit. Hell, skip series boxes in general till at least you absolutely know if you want an angry hot vape (then get a VCP). Unlike hybrid/510 tubes, I think series are worse in trying to pickup when you're starting to find out what kind of box you want. Hybrid is a simple "does this pin stick out far enough?" question while building for series is a whole different mindset you need to have.

Now parallel, that's something okay to start with. And with that, start with the basics with a classic Hammond box. Ton of good modders these days pumping them out & built like a tank.

Best recommendation stay away from hybrid style connections until you know what you are doing and are experienced. Yes the Cricket is cheap but not a beginner mod.

Also Clones, yes they're cheap but very hit and miss. You can find a quality authentic for a decent price. For example I got a Sage tube for $40, Oros V2 for $45 and an Arthas for $30. All from Beyond Vape on sale and top quality.

With all that here's my lecture I always give to those just starting Mech's.

1. Ohm's law, http://www.steam-engine.org/ makes it easy and there's even an app on it for Android

2. Batteries, fucking batteries, take good care of your batteries and know them!!!!!!!

a. Avoid shit batteries like eFest who rewrap rejects with grossly inflated amp ratings. Stick with authentic LG, Sony or Samsung from reputable (not eBay or Amazon) sources, great places that I get authentics from are -

http://liionwholesale.com/

https://www.imrbatteries.com/

b. Stick well within Continuous Discharge Rate (CDR) Not the "pulse"

c. Keep up to date with what Mooch tests and battery ratings, follow his posts on Facebook and his Blog and only use his recommend batteries.

d. In Mod's with multiple batteries, marry them.

e. Get some battery wraps, they're cheap and easy to re-wrap batteries. Any nicks, tears or what ever don't be stupid and just re-wrap.

3. Don't build stupid low a good builder can chuck and get awesome dense vape from a good build. It's simple, with 20 CDR Amp batteries -

a. Single battery mod's you're fine with .2 ohms on up

b. Dual Parallel you're fine with .15 on up. Parallel you take the full CDR of one battery then add 1/2 the CDR of the next battery

c. Series you double the voltage but you share the amps . So a series you build high with a lot of wire mass no lower that .4 ohms.

4. Make sure you don't have any shorts. For an extra caution any new build I will vape on a regulated mod for a few drips or with a tank about a 1/4 tank. This is to insure nothing wonky with my build like shorts.

5. Careful if it's not in your hand, if it doesn't have a lock on the button and you pit it in your pocket (which I really don't recommend) insure nothing else is in your pocket and it's loose. Don't want to put it in your front pocket and blow up ya know ;)

6. Last but certainly NOT the least, keep it clean! Clean it when you first get it "before" you even use it and clean it on a regular basis.

a. Ultrasonics are a very good investment, got mine off Amazon for around $25.

Are you really looking for a mech mod, or just a smaller device that will work when you are on the clock?

Are clouds and more power that important, or is a smaller form factor that "gets the job done" more what you are after?

welcome to the thunderdome.
what kind of money are you willing to invest in this?
to get a consistant vape similar to what your experience is like now you need to have a build a smidge lower than a .2 which means, you need high drain batteries. 25r or hb series will do it with room to spare (for safety). also id recommend a mech that the switch housing is magnetic, to avoid hot buttons.
theres a pretty huge amount of selection, ranging from a quick 50 dollar clone/rda duo to a few hundred dollars for authentic american or filipino metal, it all boils down to what you wanna do and what youre willing to spend.
id recommend getting an able or timekeeper clone from fasttech (or maybe someone else can recommend a good site that sells clones thats maybe faster shipping, fasttechs thr only one i know about.
anyway, the one on the left is an able clone.
a902f4e30d2ff115f9814cfd02caf2c6.jpg

cost me like 20 bucks. you can buy sleeves from fastech or from anywhere since authentic sleeves fit on the clone.
since it is a hybrid top cap, which means the atomizer connects direct to the battery with no in between pin to transfer current from one point to the other, youd need a hybrid friendly atomizer. basically a hybrid friendly atomizer is one that the positive pin extends out of the 510 casing enough to where it can make contact without the casing making contact ( because if it does, kaboom!).
i dont know of any tanks that have this, since im not into tanks, but there are a bunch of drippers that are hybrid friendly.
365641835bee9cf9ae71911ab5047cce.jpg

ignore the blue mod, the rda on top is a clone, battle deck clone with battle cap, very hybrid friendly. its the only clone i can recommend since its the only clone atomizer i own. aside from being hybrid friendly it will also allow you to purchase caps in the future (complyfe, avid, av or whatever) for further customization which allows you to change appearance (sometimes airflow) while using essentially the same setup, which imo is the niche of of able mod.
if you find you like it, id recommend getting authentic, since it allows for more customization of everything on the mod and even allows you to stack them, with an adaptor if you find you want to vape in series in the future. the clone does now allow this however since the threading on it is different than the authentic, ive yet to see a 1:1 xlone of the able.

I don't recommend hybrid style connection to people just starting Mech's, not really a good idea. They should have some experience before diving into direct Atty to battery, seriously.

i can see that, but i disagree.
theres nothing out there thay can prepare someone for a hybrid style connection. the only thing to look out for, i mentioned.
years of vaping vvvw and mechs with pins wont teach you anything about hybrids... thats why we have people with some experience posting pics, asking "is this safe with hybrids? i dunno".
other than using an atty with a proper pos contact, is there any added danger?
but thats ok, i respect your opinion.

Just like it's irresponsible for putting a new driver in a Semi Truck or F1 Formula Racer it's irresponsible to recommend a hybrid style connection to a Newbie Mech user. Just recommending "insure 510 extends or is adjustable" there is a lot more shit. Like "if" a 510 pin backs into the battery when tightening the atty or battery down. Heat transfer from the Atty, over dripping, etc. etc.

Mech's are basically easy but hybrid or hybrid style connections are another thing and level of shit they have to watch.

no amount of vaping will ease you into vaping hybrid style mechs...
vaping on a shitty flagship mod wont teach you anything about any hybrid out there whatsoever.

Using a regular mech will ease you into using a hybrid mech, but if you're the kind of person that doesn't learn anything from using a regular mach, then you shouldn't use hybrids either.
Personally i feel no need to use hybrids, the main reason that a lot of people are using hybrids is that the noisy cricket is so popular.

how will using a mech ease you into using a hybrid?
furthermore series have been around way before the cricket.

Using a mech should teach you about safety, how to be responsible with usage, cleaning an maintaining the mod, checking for problems and identifying them.
If you used a regular mech and didn't learn any of the above then a mech is not for you, regular or hybrid.

Series have been around before the cricket, but the cricket made it more popular, besides not all series are hybrids.

so you think regular mechs with pins dont cause accidents or vent out? is that the general consensus here? you never seen, years ago the pics people posted of the pin falling in the tube or jamming into the cell causing a vent? or damage to the pins insulator causing the same? or regular old overheating of cells like can happen in any mod?
you know why you dont hear about em now? cause most mods with pins are terrible, with few exceptions and all quality mods today just happen to be hybrid style...
there nothing else to it other than having an extended pin... if you press in too hard and damage the flat top, you would have done the same if it had a pin.
i simply dont agree with all the fear mongering.

Well that's your opinion

Oros, Arthas, Sage, VCP Piglet, VCP Big Pig, Margarita, Anubis, Mutant, Bandit, Pegasus, War Chief are all excellent quality and construction and all have pins. Fuck loads better than any Clone's I've seen, used or own.

I've put inline Voltage Tester and Voltage drop is minimal if any compared to a quality mech with a pin. I've even tested Noisy Cricket with the Hybrid deck and the upgrade kit, zero difference.

But stick with Hybrids if that is what you like, there's a lot of people who like them but there are also a lot who don't. Personally I don't like them for the simple reason that you're limited to what devices you can use on them "and" the heat transfer. But just stop with the shit talking that the only "quality" mods are ones with hybrid style connections. That's such a load of shit and you know it.

I wasn't the one claiming the only quality Mod's are only Hybrid style connection.

As for your comment about baby stepping, can't tell you how many people I've seen with hybrid style Mod's (especially with the price of the Noisy Cricket) that don't have a clue of proper devices to run on them let alone maintenance. So yes it's irresponsible to launch a Newbie into a Hybrid mod without giving them the entire run down and what they have to watch out for. You call it fear mongering I say it's responsible to get them to know and experience the basics before they launch into even higher maintenance style Mech.

Mech's are IMO safer than regulated Mod's because "you" are responsible for your safety, regulated it's a chip and electronic components. We all know electronic components fail. So to me people are lulled into a false sense of security and that IMO is more dangerous. But the key thing with Mech's is people need to learn how to use them safely, which isn't hard. But please stop with the bullshit, you know hybrid's are more maintenance than Mech's with 510.

No one's shitting their diaper's, but when I see bullshit being flung I call it out.

no, i dont. all i use is hybrid mechs, tube or series and only thing ive had to worry about is that the 510 pin is clear. didnt even realize there was more to it. its not hard. you dont need a class on it. what the op needed to know about hybrid, i said it. theres nothing else to know about em, no added maintenance. dont see why youre getting so aggressive about it.
also all the mechs you mentioned have a superior, hybrid, counterpart.
theres a reason theyre used almost exclusivelu in comps (even if that doesnt interest you), theres a reason why most shops are pushing em and theres a reason why the resale value is so high. look at yhr forst few pages at fasttechs new shit, all hybrid clones.. look at most reviewers newest videos, all hybrids... why do you think theyre so popular? you think everyone just has a deathwish?
whatever dude, it is what it is. we disagree and thats alright. but we are jusy going back n forth and getting nowhere at this point.
have a good one.

Did you even consider arching, short pins and loose adjustable pins? I guess not.
It only takes a fraction of a second to dead short a battery and by then it's too late.
Don't know which reviewer vids you look at, but the ones I look at mostly warn about atty pins being too short for hybrid, or warn about hybrid usage in general.

Look......

I understand the hybrid VS traditional mech debate. The OP has not even been back to even answer my questions.

HOWEVER, If someone has experience with mechs, @martnargh is correct in that there is nothing out there to assist in a transition to hybrid mechs.

I think we all agree that no one should ever start with hybrids, and there are several things different about using them over a traditional mech.

So stop the damn arguing already.

Exactly

A LOT of devices out there are NOT suitable/safe to use with Hybrids.

I have no issue with those who choose hybrid connections, hell I have a few myself but prefer my mod's with 510 pins.

And again, I call bullshit to only hybrids are the high quality mods. That and they are superior, that's just an opinion, haven't a clue why he continues to push that bullshit.

That's the point that started the back and forth, the point was that Newbie's really shouldn't be starting on Hybrid style connections. @nightshard and I have no issues with experienced users on Hybrids. Issue we take is recommending them to Newbies

We don't know what experience the OP has. Being they she has vaped for 2 years, it's likely she could already have mech experience.

So this really could go either way. They certainly are not new to vaping, if they have vaped for two years.

Well, I have several mechs (tubes, boxes, hybrids) but I almost ALWAYS use a regulated device. While I like mechs, I like the consistent vape from a regulated more. Besides, it is more convenient for me to use regulated devices on the go, which I am always on the go.

So in other words, until the OP returns to enlighten us on what she has used, we don't actually know what experience she has.

really comes down to the market of tube mods not being what it once was and what has released the last year or so have been overwhelmingly hybrid. Same with the lack of locking rings which is something that actually kinda bugs me

there is a reason why a lot of the big names in the mechanical game are flooding yhe market with hybrids.
my go to mech mod are the rogue mod or the tvl colt 45, neither have a lock ring but they also have 35+ pound switches...

Newbies should not be starting with mechs at all. They should be starting with Hammond boxes. There is nothing wrong with 1590G. I still use it and enjoy it's charm,...and it provides closest safe experience to a mechanical mod.
About hybrids......
Less parts to get oxidized, less parts to malfunction, less to adjust (it can get confusing), so yes.. Hybrid all the way. Some attys don't have 510 long enough??? Some don't, but I didn't buy anything made in last year an half that didn't have 510 long enough. Can 510 malfunction??? Yes! But that doesn't have anything to do with a Hybrid mod, it is malfunctioning rta/rda. Don't buy shity hardware and you should be fine. Who ever does not understand what is a "long enough" 510, shouldn't even think about mech mod. There is no quality made mods that are dangerous or not. It is always a human factor that is causing the accident by making a wrong choice. Should a 18yo jump in a 900HP car,... Absolutely. One idiot less and more pussy for every one else. Natural selection at its best.

Yes! thats what i mean...
could be ive been using them for so long now i dont see this big threat like the fear mongerers do.
but as ive been saying, nothing will prepare you for a hybrid other than to just do it. prepare yourself with knowledge, read a little, its not rocket science. and definitely less maintenance than a regular mech.. especially if you get something like a rogue where only button housing is only removable piece.
i dunno though im just going start ignoring the hybrid hype folk as i ignored the resistance nazis a few years ago.
within the hobby we can have difference of opinions without people getting mad about it.

I agree. Dirt bike didn't teach me how to ride a 1100 GSXR any more then bicycle did. Neither black powder though me how to handle m4. Hybrids, firearms, cars, and burgers don't kill people. Stupidity does.

Nothing in this thread has been "anti" hybrid, we've repeated this over and over again. Just stop getting your panties in a bunch when people state the facts that hybrid style mods you have to be extra cautious.

That's a nice fuckin box for that price.
I've had mine for about a year now and it works great. Also comes apart easily for cleaning the contacts. There's no auto fire risk either since the button is insulated. Only downside is the 510 isn't adjustable. I mean it technically is, but if you back it off too far you get misfires. I bought it for $150 and felt like that was too much, but for the price it's at it's one helluva deal. It's a very solid device though. After a year in use I have no scratches on it, even on the inside of the door.

Thank you for your advice. I'll check out some of the mods you mentioned. I have to be honest I did look at the sage mod and was sold because I believe that's the one that has an owl on it and I'm stupid and usually just buy things that are pretty or have owls on them. I'm trying to stay away from doing that so its good to hear that it's not s completely shitty thing to look into. I'm pretty good with my batteries. My boyfriend has stressed that since the first day I stepped away from those tiny little vape pens and got a mod so I have wraps and I check my batteries daily.

I thought about the smpl but my boyfriend keeps saying I don't want one because the button gets hot. Is that something they're known for?
