Meet the Fans Resurrecting a Legendary Cancelled LEGO Bionicle Game

When Bionicle: Tales of the Tohunga was released for the GameBoy Advance back in 2001, it was poorly received, to say the least. A licensed game themed around LEGO’s hugely popular Bionicles figures, IGN gave it a 4.5, saying “I've had more fun watching my grandmother play bingo.” It even immediately faced legal trouble, having to be renamed post-launch after Maori tribes from New Zealand complained about LEGO’s blatant cultural appropriation.



But Bionicles fans still found something to like in it, and those who managed to beat it were rewarded with a glimpse at what was next. The GBA game ended with a special cutscene showing the mythical Toa arriving on the island of Mata Nui, an exciting tease for a planned PC-exclusive sequel called Bionicle: The Legend of Mata Nui -- but 17 years later that sequel has still never materialised.
