I just got the moonshot tank. I know nothing about rebuilding. I wanted to know if I can use it with my alien mod, what gauge should the coils be and best cotton and coil wire to use? Thanks.

Hi, I don't see why you couldn't use this on your Alien mod. As for your other questions, it's probably a matter of personal preference. I use 24ga SS for most of my coils, and rayon for my wicks.
BTW, moved your thread to the general rebuildable RTA RDA section to get you better results.

First --- If you haven't done so already, hit up the YouTube sites about that tank.
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=MOONSHOT+RTA

I just watched this one --- coves a lot of the details about that RTA

Then it comes down to your preference on coil builds. Use Steam-Engine (http://www.steam-engine.org/coil.asp) for help with different wire types and coil builds.

Start simple -- don't try to over complicate it. If you over complicate it you will get frustrated. That leads to no good results.

If your a first time coil builder, watch some you tube videos on coil building. They helped me out greatly. Here are some that I usually recommend.

Thanks for this, it's really helpful. What I guess I wanted to know was for this specific tank, is there a certain gauge I HAVE to use, how many coil loops do I make, what type of wire works for this tank?

There is nothing that says you HAVE to use anything specific. I could recommend some different basic builds if you tell me your vape style.
Are you a MTL (mouth to lung) vape type or more DL (direct lung) vape type?
Do you like cold vapes or warm vapes?
What batteries are you running in your Alien MOD? This will tell me the AMP limit and the mAh run time.
Are you needing the batteries to run you all day? Do you have extra pair of batteries to change out if you run at high wattage?

so many questions just for a "coil build" :D

Direct lung, cooler than hotter vape, LG 18650 3000mah batteries, I usually run 50-55w and I don't vape all day long like one charge will last me a few days. I also prefer flavor over clouds.

Excellent. That helps. Let me see what I can come up with.

I don't have any wire yet as I was waiting to get some suggestions on which to buy. I see what you did there with the table. I'm sorry if I'm asking stupid questions but I have absolutely no rebuilding experience. As per the results: number of wraps refers to the loops in the coil, right? I've seen the coil tools and I remember seeing 2-3mm so I understand that's for the diameter but for the leg length do I measure than when I'm cutting the piece of the wire I'm going to wrap or if not when is that measured? Also I know it's about preference but does the diameter of the coil and the number of wraps have an indication on flavor or cloud production and is there a certain gauge or wrap number that should be used with the moonshot tank because I may have been misinformed, someone told me to only use kanthal wire and 22gauge with the moonshot?

There are no "stupid" questions... There are "uneducated" questions.

number of wraps refers to the loops in the coil
Correct

leg length
Ignore this -- you don't care and it won't effect anything

diameter of the coil and the number of wraps have an indication on flavor or cloud production
Kinda --- The ID (inner diameter) and the # of wraps alter the ohms (Ω) of the coil, which alter the wattage and temperature of the coil, which will alter the vapor output.

Absolutely NOT! You can use anything you want, even copper or gold wire if you wanted to. Each wire type affects the resistance of the coil and many other aspects. The most common wire types used are Kanthal A1, Nichrome N80, and Stainless Steel (SS316L). These are most readily available and prices are within reason.

I'm digging up some basic coil building videos, you will need them --- standby.

I will make this one comment about the RTA that you chose to purchase.
The build deck on your chosen RTA is one of the most cumbersome and difficult build decks to start out on for beginners. There are better RTA tanks with better build decks that I would have recommended for a beginner.

There are SO MANY more out there on YouTube. Do a search for "coil building 101" and "coil building for beginners"
Start watching them. They will GREATLY help with understanding the basics and give you ideas of where to start.

I personally had a lot of the hand tools needed to do coil building. I then purchased "some" of the tools as separate pieces. In hind site, I should have just purchased the damn Coil Master Kit as it had everything that I've purchase in pieces and I ended up paying more. --- Get the kit, it's not expensive in the long run.

Personally, I buy my wire from Lightning Vapes. There are MANY other places to get it though. My choice to use them is purely because I live in Florida and LV is based in Florida not far from me. So I get it very quickly and their wire is very clean. Some wire has been found to be extremely dirty.

There are a lot of builders on here that will recommend alternative suppliers for their preferred wire. I can't recommend them only because I personally have not used them.

I use Amazon for a lot of my other supplies (Koh Gen Do Cotton, Cotton Lobo, Rayon, etc --- even wire) ... this is because I have a prime account and get free shipping and it's dirt cheap on Amazon.

When I first started out building I bought a Moonshot and a Mage. I hated building on the Moonshot and the Mage gave me fits. I kept at it though and eventually got both to work very well with very simple 24g SS wire coils. Then I ventured into RDA's to learn better technique. Once I got fairly good at making consistant simple coils and learned the art of good whicking, I boxed the Moonshot up and stuffed it into a drawer. If it never comes out again, I'm OK with that. I found it to be a pain in the ass to build on and once I realized how good the flavors could be in a single coil built RDA, that's all I use sitting around the house. When I leave the house, I stick with my Mage with very simple 24g SS 5 wrap coils. What I seemed to struggle with the most in the beginning was proper wicking. I'm going to try my hand at working on RDTA's next to see if I can achieve the best of both worlds.
