This Mortal Kombat X comic is beginning to feel more like a legitimate Mortal Kombat story, if only by virtue of the fact that it's become increasingly violent and grotesque with time. This latest issue focuses largely on the all-out war between Kotal Kahn's empire and the invading Shokan army, enraged by Kotal's humiliation of Prince Goro. Heads are cleaved, organs are eviscerated, and the action rarely lets up. It makes for an entertaining conflict, if not a terribly emotionally engaging one.

I've criticized this book in the past for its lack of self-awareness and humor. It's hard to say if that flaw is intentionally being addressed here, but it's difficult not to read an element of satire or self-parody into the frequent shots of characters being stabbed, sliced or brutalized. Excessive violence is a hallmark of Mortal Kombat. The conflict in this book has progressed to a point where it can now revel in that aspect. The art in this issue is fairly uneven when it comes to facial work and more subtle storytelling elements, but the action flows fast and heavy.
