Going to the movies is more expensive than it's ever been, as average ticket prices reached an all-time high this past quarter.
According to the National Association of Theatre Owners (via Variety), the average price for a movie ticket climbed to $8.73 during the second quarter of 2016, eclipsing the prior $8.70 record set last year.
The price marks a 1.7 percent jump from Q1 2016, which had an average ticket price of $8.58, as well as a 1.4 percent increase over last year's second quarter average of $8.61. The reason for the jump is believed to be due to more premium showings in IMAX and 3D, with Disney's latest animated hit Finding Dory and Marvel's superhero blockbuster Captain America: Civil War leading the charge.
