Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.
We're more than halfway through the first season of Mr. Robot, and the first few episodes had the most progress against taking down Evil Corp. Teaming up with FSociety to take down the conglomerate and change the world seemed like it was going to be the primary goal, and while the plan is still in the works, Mr. Robot has shaped up to be a more personal story. It's as much about the smaller scale as it is the big picture. Adjusting the scope hasn't always been successful, but it definitely worked in "br4ve-trave1er.asf."
The series has taken the bold move of flipping everything Elliot knows on his head. He's a vigilante using his hacking skills for the greater good, but what happens when he believes his actions caused Shayla's death? It's enough that he feels guilty about the loss of a human life, however, this is one of the few humans who has been kind to him. He cared for her. Losing her of all people is painful. What if Vera's actions are enough to make Elliot want to quit hacking altogether? We've seen his skills many times, and he was especially impressive and on his game to get Vera out of prison. If Elliot bails, I could see an opening for Angela to get in with FSociety. She doesn't seem to be as proficient with computers as Elliot, but she's ticked at Evil Corp and her access at Allsafe is valuable.
