Reality is a nebulous and subjective term. My reality is not your reality, and Elliot's take on the matter is something altogether different. The question of what's actually happening is constantly being asked in Mr. Robot. It's a challenging premise to build a show around, but Mr. Robot is written and performed in such a way that the question is never at the front of your mind. It's processing in the background, sure, but there's so much character development happening that whether what Elliot's showing us is real or not isn't a distraction from the story.
The theme of reality was especially key in the most recent episode, "da3m0ns.mp4." It doesn't take long to realize Elliot is experiencing hallucinations as he goes through withdrawal. The hallucinations do go down a weird but fascinating trip into Elliot's mind, but they also eat up most of the episode. We've been waiting for FSociety to take their next step and just as they take a forward stride, things flip into slow motion. I would have preferred seeing them actually get to Steel Mountain and start enacting Elliot's very clever plan.
