Mutation X quad coil build...any pointers? (pic)

Hi guys,

Not the greatest quality pic, but this was my first quad coil build attempt. Mutation x v4, wire is kanthal 28gauge twisted. ie, double 28g twisted, that is.

Any tips? Anything look weird or wrong?

I was vaping it around 80 watts. Sucker got hot quick, also. Vapor production was decent but I just didn't feel it was, say, anywhere near double what a dual coil has produced. Is this normal? Maybe gains diminish after 2 coils?

Lotsa people have the oomf problem with quads. Too see why, next time you're building, just do a single at double the resistance you want and give it a few pulses. Note the ramp time. Now add another coil. Pulse again. Notice it's about the same, if not a little slower. The current has doubled, but so has the amount of metal.

Think about it this way. If you have a dual coil at .2 and a quad coil .2, which do you think is going to heat up faster? Remember, they both have the same amount of power going to them, but one of them has twice as much wire for the current to move across.

Now, the increased amount of metal is going to give you more heat overall, it just might not get there in time. This can be especially problematic with twisted wire, which is already on the slow side.

You either need to up the power or try something with less metal in it. Maybe a quad 28, 26, or 24? With quads, you don't have to use crazy amounts of wire to get lots of surface area because you're dropping 4 coils in there. You're always gonna have more surface area than the dual equivalent. You can compromise some surface area for ramp-up time. It'll be a cooler, but denser vape that way.

You could also get crazy and swap the quad twisted 28 out for a dual parallel twisted 28. You'll probably see a significant jump in performance just doing that. That will be one HOT vape, though.
