Mutation X V4S (and Griffin RTA) Screw/Hex Key size?

They're really small; most of my RDAs with grub screws fit 1.5mm keys and they're too big, so smaller than that... but I don't know what are standard sizes below it so don't want to guess. I asked VapeNW and they didn't know. I like having extra hex keys when I can. The Griffin and Mutation V4S (two post) appear to use the same diameter screws.

If anyone knows, that would be awesome.

Thanks.

hi, maybe i can help. i also have a griffin rta and had the aromamizer rdta dual post. i use the same key for both. same size.
i also happen to work in a machine shop and use precisions tools and equipment. long story short, the hex key size measures at about .050 standard and/or 1.30 mm. i was lucky to find these keys all over the shop just laying around.

@no12judge Thank you! So, I just want to make sure I'm understanding, 1.3mm hex keys/drivers should fit these screws? How silly that the Mutation XV4s doesn't use 1.5mm screws, seems fairly standard on other RDAs. I understand it more with the smaller size of a 22mm Griffin. Bleh. Of course the keys that come with it are crap.

yes, i double checked the size. pulled out my caliper and measured it myself. the keys that come with your rta/rda are crap. it was the reason i started looking for hex keys in that size in the first place.
idk why screws change from one atty to another, but i bet we can blame those who draw the plans.

sounds about right I bought a screwdriver set off of amazon and the two that seem to fit most of the grub screws are the 1.3mm and the 1.5mm. I hate the little thing they give you with the atties so I bought a set with actual handles.

Yes, it's a 1.3 mm hex. I'm utilizing my Wiha high quality precision drivers, I own, due to my hobby flying R/C collective pitch helicopters. It's worth using/getting quality tools, 'cause they don't strip the screws as easy. I had some screws that we're screwed in with a Loctite overdose by the factory, that I would have stripped without these high quality tools.

Do either of you (or anyone else) happen to know the length/thread size of the screws? They're pretty terrible; would like to get my own...

fatdaddyvapes.com sells grub screws. You get 6 each of 3 different sizes for about $5. He had them special made for our purposes. One of these days vape shops will pull their heads out of their asses and start carrying things like replacement screws and o-rings. Proper screws and o-rings can turn a piece of crap into a real gem. If anyone knows of another good source for that sort of stuff please post it.

Thats the set I bought off of amazon. The Wiha precision drivers seem like a really nice set and make it so much easier to deal with those grub screws. The little key thing they give I drop it repeatedly when trying to use it but I dont have that issue with the Wiha set :) It was a little pricey but well worth it in my opinion

Sorry, can I confirm one more time it's a .050 hex driver for at least the Griffin? I usually think of hexes in mms but the listing I found for the wiha is in inches. I have 1.5mms so I don't really need a full set. I did buy one full cheapo set that had a 1.3mm because it was the best thing I could find at the time, but their 1.3mm hex doesn't fit the Mutation screws. I haven't tried it on the Griffin yet, granted (I'm waiting for a new deck) but I'd like to get something better in the mail. I guess I'm not 100% sure they're the exact same size screws but there are only so many and the included hex keys are cross compatible. I'd rather make sure I have something that fits the Griffin anyway.

@Neunerball That's a 1.5mm, or .059 inches (maybe listed as .6 for a driver?), which is too big for certain. Most of my RDAs use 1.5mm grub screws and the drivers I have for those are too big for the Griffin and Mutation.

THIS is the one I'm looking at, pending confirmation of the size.

Oops, wanted to show the 1.3 mm. :) However, I have the metric set of the Wiha hex screw drivers, due to needing different sizes for my helis. You could also check R/C stores for high quality hex drivers.

No problem :) And yes, R/C store is a good idea, there just isn't a ton ton around here that appears to have such small drivers... but I can keep looking. Figured it was easy enough to just do Amazon for now. I mostly wanted to confirm that .050 and 1.3mm are the same size hex driver, because I THINK 1.3mm is actually .051 inches. Obviously a silly distinction but since I just ordered something that doesn't work, trying to avoid doing it again!

.050" driver is for use in SAE 4-40 grub screws
.050"= 1.27mm
https://www.google.com/search?q=.05+in+mm&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
a 1.3mm driver may or may not work, depending how sloppy the machining is on the grub screw.
Ideally, you should have a .05" and a 1.3mm driver (ideally)

M2 uses 0.9 hex key
M2.5 uses 1.3 hex key
M3 uses 1.5 hex key
4-40 uses 0.50" hex key (1.27mm)

Thanks @PuffOn, very helpful. So a .050 driver IS a little smaller than a 1.3mm? Or am I misunderstanding? I thought I read somewhere that these screws were M2.5, which would mean that a 1.3 should fit... I don't know if that information is wrong, if the cheap 1.3 I have is sloppy, if the screws themselves are sloppy, or some combination of those reasons.

So then hopefully the wiha .050" driver should do the trick? I'm not trying to be thick about this, it's just been a little frustrating.

Also, I realized that when I search for the .050 driver on Amazon I'm also getting ball-end hex results, which is obviously not right... so trying to make sure I'm getting exactly what I should be! I'm not usually this helpless, jesus.

Yes the .050 is 3 thousands smaller than the 1.3mm, which should work fine for a M2.5 or a 4-40 grub.
Ball end are typically a little smaller, allowing them to swivel.
It is confusing, wish atty makers would include specs of screws and o-rings....

I use a Bondhus Driver for the Griffin and other RTA's (M2.5 = 1.27mm)
