The venture into DIY ejuice can seem overwhelming to say the least when you are trying to decided to make the switch from vendor juice to your own recipes. I started vaping on a whim to help a friend quit smoking. it was one of those sure I'll help you quit we will quit together things. both of us successfully quit smoking. I was having a lot of trouble finding flavors I liked and was getting bored of what I had and then one day a google search brought up DIY ejuice. I thought oh man this is for me. I am totally a DIY and hobby guy so I jumped on it. I read and read and read until I had the courage to order supplies. once i got my vapemail in I put everything on the cabinet and stared at it for what felt like hours. I did everything I was supposed to and my juice tasted like crap. for weeks I beat my head against the wall trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. if you are in this rut then maybe these tips will help.

first thing above everything is just have fun ! stop worrying about making the perfect juice. as a new mixer you are going to have to go through a lot of trial and error. mix single flavor batches until you get what you are looking for in a flavor and work from there. if you are getting discouraged because your banana does not taste the way you think it should dont automatically assume its your mixing. more than likely its just a flavor that does not taste the way you want it to. try a lot of brands, as many as you can. each have their own flavor and qualities. one banana may taste nothing like a real banana for pies but is an amazing candy runts banana.

give your juice a chance. dont just throw a few drops on some cotton and give it toot and say oh god this is not what I wanted and toss it. make 3 or 5 ml and vape it all day. take some time to taste all the little things about it that makes it unique from other manufacturers. make a pro and con list in your head or on paper. think about how you can use it or make it work in a different recipe maybe but dont discard it as unusable.

there is no magic number. flavors have ranges where changes happen. some more drastic than others, some none at all. there is a lot of hype especially for new mixers that say you need to use 15-20 % of this or that , so you might go use 20 % coffee flavor for example and blow your taste buds apart. that flavor probably taste really nice at 1%. I can use TFA apple candy just fine at 1 and 2% and taste it and like it. at 10% its almost to sour and like a jolly rancher. I pick up on sour things much easier than others so this is untrue for some. thats where the whole taste is subjective thing comes in. you just have to play with it. if its to strong take some and add half base to it and try it again you might like it.

try it yourself. you cant just go off what you read on some internet site. take recipes and suggestions only as guidelines not rules set in stone. not every juice needs a 3 month steep or 4 hours in crock pot while doing a magic rain dance. tho some do and thats when the fun really begins. if you want to know what 4 hours in a crock pot will do to your juice just try it out! whats the harm. I have crock potted juice at 200 degrees before just because why not. do crazy things like vape bread crust or put tobacco in a cola just because. who knows you may come up with something really unique. when you do remember to share ;)

it took me awhile to realize these things. once I took the pressure off myself to make a certain juice or a clone of whatever vendor brands I liked my mixes got better. I started using the flavors to the particular flavors advantage rather than trying to make it work. meaning I built recipes around the star flavor. I have 2 favorite strawberry flavors.both are very different and if I swapped the 2 they would kill the others recipe. they only work because they have a particular taste. I am by no means a master mixer and constantly learning new things and disproving my old theories. dont give up and let your own tongue decide what you like best not what the majority likes. these are only my ideas and tips to new and old mixers. I like to quote HeadInClouds " get mixin and vape faster"

Thanks for this post, I started DIYing a few weeks ago, made a lot of juice, but only a few have been worth making bigger bottles of, I have been getting a bit discouraged, but realized I was trying to run before I could walk, was following recipes with 7-10 flavors in them and didn't have every flavor, so was changing out for others. So last week I thought maybe I just needed to be more basic, so now doing single flavors and recipes with only 2-3 flavors in them and already things are looking brighter and getting juices that are pretty good.

awesome. DIY is so fun. I could go on and on about how much I like flavor a particular cherry and 50 people agree that cherry is the best. so you go buy the same cherry and try to make cherry cola when the rest of us are making cherry pie and you cant figure out why this cherry taste so bad. probably because you needed FA black cherry for the cola not FA cherry. lol. glad to hear your mixes are getting better. I have so many recipes from just single flavors to 8 or 9 flavors. they are all good. it just takes a little time and it all comes together. welcome to club !!! dont forget to share your recipes :)

That roasted chicken recipe was a joke, wasn't it? If not, then kudos on that. You're a better man than I. I eat just about everything. Stuff most people cringe at. But vaping roasted chicken is the limit.
haha no i vaped it. I had roasted chicken in one tank and apple pie in the other. the apple pie washed it down nicely lol. I have 10ml of it if you want to try it. Ill send some dilution free of charge. ha

This Is key, "I have 2 favorite strawberry flavors.both are very different and if I swapped the 2 they would kill the others recipe. they only work because they have a particular taste."

Don't try to swap a flavor just because they have similar names. I posted this in another thread, but it fits here too... I made a boo boo the other week. I knew better, but did it anyway. One of my ADVs has Raspberry Sweet, and I ran out mid mix. Duh. I decided that MAYBE regular raspberry might be OK, since I only needed another .4mls. Nope. Practically ruined the whole bottle. 50mls. It's still vapable, in a pinch, but it's certainly NOT the ADV I was making.

ya and if you dont try both you wont know what the difference is and swear off that flavor. I make a strawberry banana smoothie with fa strawbery and fa banana. if all I had was capellas sweet strawberry I might think the recipe was bad, but on the other hand places I use capellas sweet strawberry could never be duplicated using FA strawberry alone. its to natural tasting and on top of all that if you combine the 2 they compliment each other. o_O man it can get crazy hahahahaha

hey dude, just go for it. its easier than getting that sleeve tatted lol. but really after you make your first mix and get past those jitters its on. if you are a hobby guy you will love diy. I happen to like cooking also so this is just really fun for me. I would check out bullcity for vg/pg and small sample flavors. super good price. purevapes is a good place to get alot of FA samples for cheap. vaperstek is the only place I would recommend nic. its the best. I have tried other nic that people rave about and I actually liked it until I vaped the vaperstek nic. not that the others are bad but just not even on the same level. check out the flavor art thread. lots of really good mixers in that group that are more than willing to help.

Interesting. I'll be sure to try combining two of the same flavor from different companies. Could be one of the tricks the good juice makers use.

I use peanut butter in a few of my recipes. Someone on ECF said their ideal PB was a mix of CAP & LA flavors, and there were several folks who agreed. Apparently one has the smooth, creamy PB taste, the other brings the roasted nut flavor. I finally got around to ordering up some of the CAP PB this week; hopefully I'll have time this weekend to find out if, in my opinion, they are right or not.

Oops... That should have been CAP & TFA. No matter, I've got all three and will try it both ways. I remember the LA & TFA as similar flavors, but it's been a long while since I did that taste test, and my taste buds probably hadn't fully recovered from smoking. It's time to revisit that one.

Now that I think about it, it's time to revisit a bunch of those flavors.

But not the TFA Cheesecake. Never again.

Exactly! Thanks for jogging my memory; it's been a while since I wrote that down. The sad part is that I STILL haven't gotten around to trying that recipe.

Glasseye refers to it too, and (IIRC) she(?) had a more than a couple of recipes that sounded really good.

What could possibly go wrong? :D

Thanks, will do. I like flavor art and some of TFAs stuff, namely juicy peach, and pear lately, working my way into more flavor art, I have good many. Like most starting out likely, I am mostly just trying to match a few of the seemingly basic juices that I used to buy all the time, Truth Serum, and green peach tea, mostly, I love roar's fruity juices and if I could somewhat nail truth serum I would be happy, but like most it must have more going on than just the two main flavors.

I have sort of come close on the tea, still not the mouth feel or not quite the depth. I may try some marshmallow as sweetener instead of EM next time, in the truth serum pear coconut wannabe, there is some sort of soft, tied together mouth feel to it over all, for lack of a better description, and it doesn't seem to just be from the cream. Thanks again

what tea flavor are you using ? I have never tried any vendor tea flavors so I dont really know how a good one should be and the only tea flavor I have tried is FA black tea. never had a desire for a tea vape but I do like to mess around with it now because the black tea is so awesome. just plain ol tea. its easy to make good flavored teas with .

Right now, TFA green tea, but I have flavor arts and flavor west now, with inawera's on the way. I think TFA is the green tea he uses, but the peach may not be right, or there may be a tiny bit of pear or another fruit in it. TFA is an easy green tea to work with so far, nothing really floral in it I can tell, or bitter. The roar peach green tea is very good for a summer vape, I have just grown to love it, so want to copy it, but it must have more in it or another peach all together with TFA's juicy also, the ones I have made were not bad, just not like his.

I did make some without enough flavor at first, or sweetener, I think I was at 4%-5% for the peach just trying it out for the first time, and since it is not FA, it can go higher being not as strong. I have not really messed with the other green teas from flavor art or west yet other then to add a tiny 1% to some things just cause, they seem way different then TFAs, more pronounced, but then again I just have not tried enough with them yet.

I have heard good things about that TFA green tea. I think HIC likes it. bet you could get some pretty good pointers from HIC.

With you on that one, I have tried adding tiny amounts of TFA black, or the FA green to make my green tea juice a little more complex, nah...didn't really work. Ah well...lesson learned. :)

Yeah, for the most part, was just using the wrong peach, still need to play with percentages, but I think I have the brand of flavors in the one I am trying to copy now. Still a lot of messing around with it to do, I did about copy it perfectly, just a tiny bit too much peach. Right now I am peach green tea'd out for a bit. I will have to make other things and come back to peach tea in a week or so..I want to make a coffee with FA espresso, and a few dry tobaccos...cigerete, cigar and pipe, and maybe one or two good island style tobacco maybe with coconut, rum, fruit, or at least something along those lines.

oooohhhhh an island tobacco would be awesome I bet. I do the same thing. Ill try something and then get burnt out on it and come back and usually make it better. sometimes I decide its not worth it lol

Yeah, I tried for so long to get it excact and in the process of copying I think I made a few I like more, but finally pretty much nailed the one I wanted....and now it is time to take a break from that and move on to some other ideas that may fail or be good..but I love it. I actually will have time tonight to make some stuff!!!:)

Excellent info here. I've been mixing our own for about one month now and really am enjoying it. I like cooking so that sometimes helps. I've kind of accepted falling on my face sometimes it is a learning process.

Thanks for this post. I'm a little less than one month in to diy. Yeah definitely tried to sprint for the victory and tripped right out of the gate.

I think I'm experimenting with too many flavors / bottle and also too many flavors at a time. You know "Ima create my entire juice line over night"
It brings me back and puts me in my place. Those awful cooking concoctions and mixed drinks before I really learned how to with both.

I need to just pick something and stick with it and fine tune it. Then I can pick more flavors out of my box of confusion and rinse and repeat.

TL/DR:
This should be fun
I only learn from failure

Truth. I feel like I'm off on the seasoning. Which is huge.
So from reading I need to up my stock to include:
Sour
Vodka
Distiller water
Ac vinegar
Lemon juice
Marshmallow flavor

And then learn to utilize these. And if I'm missing anything huge here let me know. Like my mouth and nostrils don't feel gushy with flavor on my mixes and I don't think I'm under flavoring at 10-15%. Maybe even a little flavor heavy if it's additives missing.

Ohhh quick question if you don't mind.

Is there any way faster and less time consuming to test these flavors w/o mixing into a bottle / atty?

Example 1 part flavor to 9 parts water and swish in mouth for taste? I mean if these are food grade, would that be safe and possibly accurate? When I cook, I taste until it's perfect.

Sorry to just piggyback onto your thread.

I don't use any of those things except marshmallow! And, yes, a good way to test is to mix with water - HIC does this :)

New to forum, but not new to diy. I prefer the simpler mixes.
Flue cured (TFA) at 1%
7 Leaves (FA) at 2%
Black Honey (TFA) a few drops in Flue as a mellower
8Ball 2% 7 Leaves and .75% Black honey
Dragon Fruit (FW) 5% Sweet cream 3% steep for 5-7 days
Passion Fruit (FW) 3-5% Sweet Cream 1-3% steep for a cpl days

Tried Black Honey straight at 1% but like it better as a mixer than straight. Really mellows stronger flavors down and adds a touch of sweetness.

Havent gotten into really exotic recipes yet.

damn sorry I missed this. of your list I also do not add any of that stuff but marshmallow. if I cant make a good vape without voodoo magic its not worth it to me. easiest way to be successful at mixing is quality ingredients. greab some flavor art and some VT nicotine and vape on lol. they way I like to test flavors is just vape it up :) cost a couple pennies but in addition to water is whipped cream. get a spoonful of whipped cream and put a drop of flavoring in it and swirl it around with a tooth pick. you cant dial in % like that but way more delicious that water hahaha

another good tip to broaden you mixology skills is to ditch the vape forums. start reading other articles and forums about cooking and DIY things. I made Dr Fn Pepper from reading the history of DP and soda syrup forums. think like a chef.

I get some really good recipe ideas from the gum/candy rack at the checkout in the grocery store. I've adapted food recipes from sites like Food Network. Inspiration can come from anywhere.
