National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis publicly announced that electronic cigarettes are now banned anywhere smoking is prohibited on park service lands.
Protecting the health and safety of our visitors and employees is one of the most critical duties of the National Park Service.
Jarvis went on to lump vapor products in with tobacco, claiming: “We are therefore extending the restrictions currently in place protecting visitors and employees from exposure to tobacco smoke to include exposure to vapor from electronic smoking devices.”
Greg Conley of AVA fame says the restrictions are a bad idea and should not be enforced as, “Vapor products pose no more of a fire risk than a cellphone battery.”
The National Park Service manages all US national parks, most national monuments, and a number of other properties, both public and private. The entire system encompasses nearly 85 million acres of land.
Park Service employees were issued a memo outlining the new policy, but enforcement of the ban was not specifically outlined.
