need help!! about to buy my 1st mod, have some questions

I just wana say ive been vaping an ego style/clearomizer for almost 2 years. I feel Im finally ready for a mod ( i thought). Watched hondreds of vids on building coils and im pretty confidant I can do it. Im intrested in the silver dragon on vaperjoes deals at fasttech ( I know but $) what im confused about are the batteries. It says 67mm height and some reviews said their batteries didnt fit. Does this mean my only option is an unprotected battery? If so Im kinda worried about that. I may choose a different mod if this is the case. So my ? is what batt and charger for the silver dragon or for my 1st mod would u reccomend another mod that is protected and what batt and charger for that. Thanks for your opinions and help.

What kind of budget do you have in mind?

"Protected" (Li-Ion) batteries in mech mods are actually pretty uncommon. Considered "safe chemistry", IMR (LiMn) batteries are far more popular and don't use a PCB fuse.
Some of the most popular (quality) IMR batteries have been AW, Efest, LG, Sony, Panasonic, Orbitronic, Samsung and MNKE. Some brands/models are so desirable that there are forgeries, so always buy from a reputable vendor... one example would be RTD Vapor.

click my second sigline, and scroll to "understanding batteries" for more detailed information.

Mech mods are extremely popular and many of them are also works of art in their own way.

But I am a regulated mod kinda vaper and I like knowing that the APVs I use have all those built in protections to keep me from blowing myself up.

Nothing agains them. Just ultra paranoid due to all the people following me and listening to my words and thoughts when I am not wearing my tin foil hat.

That is going to be awfully difficult. $40? Total?

You MAYBE could find a mech of some sort from Focal or Fastech for about $15, About the same for some sort of RBA, at least $12 for a single good battery, another $15 for a single bay charger, then another $10 for material to fashion coil and wick assemblies. And hopefully you already have the tools that you will need.

I hate to say this but you are probably better off sticking with the gear that you have while you save enough to purchase good quality (not expensive but good) hardware that will last and last for you.

Jackie, I'm pretty new at this myself. I only recently got my first mech mod. But post-ego, I would suggest a regulated mod like an MVP or another regulated mod that you buy batts for. The MVP comes with built-in batts. You can use your present clearos and buy attys as your budget allows. As you move up with attys you can learn how to build coils.

I think if I had tried to do it all at once I would have gotten too aggravated.

BTW, they are about to come out with an MVP v3, so the prices on v2 are coming down but it's a great mod and I use it all the time.

Id like to get by with around $40 bucks for mod, atty, abd battery and charger if at all possiable
With that price point, at least one item, and perhaps everything you buy... will be crap. Most notably absent from your list is a ohm meter... either a ohm/build box or a DMM. Without at least the former, you have no way of verifying resistance... and preferably, you need both, so that you can check battery voltage as well as mech continuity. If you have neither... you are in dangerous waters.
  • Do not buy an off brand battery, or one from a China retailer, or one with the word "fire" in the branding. See my link to RTD Vapor in previous post.
  • Super cheap forgery (clone) mechs have notoriously poor continuity... mostly due to abysmally shoddy button quality. This means inconsistent firing, high voltage drop values and the potential for battery thermal run-away... particularly at lower resistances.
  • If you must buy a clone, buy something with a known track record of reliability. At FastTech, everything that's been around awhile has reviews and ratings... read them. When there are multiple choices for a mech (like 17 different Stingray choices for example)... the most expensive one within a materials range (i.e. copper, brass, SS etc) is often the best quality ("best" being a relative term), while the cheapest one is almost guaranteed to be crap.
  • Chargers are like batteries... don't buy something for price, buy it for quality and reliability. One of the "best buys" is last years Nitecore Intellicharger (as opposed to the current, LED screen'd 'D' series). Either an I2 or I4 will be fine, and they are both selling below $20.
Were I to price out the least costly path that still provides reasonable expectations of quality...
  • Mech - $25~$40
  • RDA - $10~$20
  • RTA - $17~$35
  • Battery - $8~$13 (ea. from a US vendor - see list in previous post)
  • Charger - (example) - Nitecore Intellicharger I2
