Need help - staple coil with SS Ribbon

Hi,
This is my first post here..

I've been reading the threads about making coils here and managed to make Clapton and fused clapton.

I then made my mind to try making a staple coil. I got .5 SS316L wire from Crazy Wire and 28g SS317L AtomizerWick.

I watched all the YouTube videos and noted that in order to stack the ribbon properly I need to pull the ribbon to straighten them but I couldn't just make it right. I didn't feel the wire being stretched like in wire. Is this how SS ribbon works? Sorry I have no experience in ribbon wire with other material.

I tried to stack them as best as I can and prepare drill and all and start to wrap them. Once done I then tried to wrap the coil using a vise and 3mm screw driver, trying hard to positioning the coil so that the ribbon will stay in vertical orientation but the coil just don't stay as I wanted. I've been trying to do this the whole day but couldn't nailed it.

Can someone please advise me :
1. How can I straighten SS ribbon? Is that how SS ribbon behave? Or I just got a bad batch of ribbon?
2. Every video of staple coil in YouTube seems have no issue when wrapping the coil in a screw driver any special tips? Or it's because my ribbon is the culprit?
3. Any recommendations where can I get a good workable ss ribbon for staple coil? I vape exclusively in TC.

Thanks in advance for all comments.

SS Ribbon isnt the easiest to work with....Im not much of a fan of it myself due to its difficulty when wrapping as it likes to warp. Larger Ribbon like .5/.6/.8 sucks to coil, wire like SS that it much more ridgid also compounds its difficulty to coil..

I HIGHLY suggest you grab some Kanthal Ribbon, your TC will still work and you wont notice any difference except the resistance being much higher as long as your still using SS Frames (I suggest 28g SS to frame the .4 Ribbon)

My trick for Stacking Ribbon wire:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByjxYyTSvEyBOFRwS1JZMG1kZVk/view?usp=sharing

You will have the most success with .4 Kanthal or N80 Ribbon Wire. Its easier to wrap and manipulate then .5 Ribbon and much easier to stack then .3 Ribbon. I get mine from here, its the most affordable but high quality Ribbon and its spooled well also: LINK

For other wire in SS buy this a few times and you wont need to buy wire for a good while afterwards: LINK

Will definitely try as soon as I got home...

I finally managed to make a staple coil after several attempts based on the tips from @raymo2u.

First successful staple coil using .3RN80/40N80 :

But still struggling with wrapping it into coil very ugly

Then decided to go back to SS ribbon again, .5R SS316L / 38 SS317L and managed to get better wrap

Hope I can make it better next time.

However, flavor wise I seems to get a quite muted flavor compared to flavor I got from fused clapton 26 316L / 38 317L but cloud wise it's slightly dense that FC.

Been playing around with watt n temp in my VS DNA 133 but not quite happy with the flavor. Tried both the staple of N80 in wattage mode and SS in temp mode.

@raymo2u, any advice on the flavor?

Thanks

I highly recommend using builds like Staples, Framed staples and the likes on a Parallel Mech Box...regulated mods have trouble pushing the current needed and battery life dramatically suffers also. The Hohm Wrecker G2 is the only box I know that performs like a mech and would suggest using it for these builds or resort to mechs....
Remember more surface area the more vapor...you will need to experiment to find where you like the ramp up time, the heat flux/ air movement in chamber space, and more to dial it in for what your looking for. If your trying to clone a feel and vape from a different pair of coils then I suggest you just stick to using the original coils...they all perform differently for a reason.

Try 1 Strand of 28g SS with 6 x..3N80 and Fused it. It should look odd but similar to this (but fully covered) ( use 5 Wraps/3mm ID)

If you ever need a deal on wire just let me know what you need...Ive been getting "Raymo2u" spools for a good bit. @Qlippoth should have some soon enough :D Its much more affordable then most places Ive seen.

Wow you got your own brand of wire? That's cool.. @raymo2u

I tried to make a single frame staple as you suggested. 1x28g ss316L / 6x.3R N80 / 38g ss317L. 5 wraps 3mm clocked at 0.3. Put it in serpent mini and turns out to be awesome.

I don't know how it works differently than the other staple coil I made buy the flavor on this one is much better and slightly better than fused clapton.

You advised earlier that I can still vape in TC mode but higher resistance? With this I can't get the TC to work. Any advice? Thanks.

Depending on the mod your using to get the TC to work you may need to take off some of the wrap so the posts "feel" the SS wire...then it will work if its not already.

The reason the coil is acting different is the 28g is ramping up faster and kickstarting the Ribbon wire. .3 likes to ramp up quickly also and its higher in resistance then .5 Ribbon wire.

So I tried another build with 1 strand of 30g 316L / 4 x 0.5 R 316L clapton with 38g 317L.

Install dual coil on my tfv8 baby rba deck clocked at 0.17 and vape wonderfully both flavor and vapor at 93 watt in TC mode in my Vaporshark DNA 133.

The challenge I realized with fancy coil wrapped tightly is to eliminate hot spot without dry burning. I don't have any issue with hot spot in spaced fancy coil but the flavor and warmth of vapor is not what I prefer. So I need to pulse the coil in wattage at around 35 to 45 watt and make sure I got no hot spot and switch back to TC.

The problem with pulsing the coil is that I seems to decrease the longevity of the coil. I perhaps burnt the protection layer of the SS coil and resulting my liquid to get darker faster. I'm seeing this based on same type and material of coils and same liquid and same level of resistance and wattage.

Any advice on this? Did I do something wrong in pulsing the coil? Thanks.

Pulsing the coil wont do much other then stiffen the wire but after a while the metal does degrade...but it can take months...There isnt a protective coating on the SS ;)

Coils should last months and months, especially Kanthal, N80 and SS Coils, even with abuse. The liquid changing to brown can be the result of the juice not being completely vaporized (vaping until the cotton is white before redripping). You should always vape the cotton dry before redripping or your cotton may start collecting this matter, its juice that not vaporized but it rapidly heated and cooled repeatedly until it forms this dark liquid. Its mostly common with sugary/sweet liquids.

Thanks for the advice. Yes I'm vaping a butterscotch liquid and it's sweet.

I always tried to let the fire button go like 1 second before the end of every pull to avoid or minimize the gunk but believe it doesn't help much.

Seems I need to clean the coil more often then, but it worth the flavor and vapor.

Thanks so much @raymo2u, will keep experimenting with other type of coils.

Hi this is my first post here I figured I'd make an account to give my thanks for starting this thread, and Kudos to Raymo2u (was rooting for you in Coil Wars nice job man drooled over your builds) I finally got the framed staple down yesterday and right after made a framed staple alien (learned alien a while ago before I had ribbon) about to install hopefully the ohms aren't too low (their in the bath now). did 26g KA1 frames/ 4x .4ka1 ribbon/ 36gn80 wrap. installed, I got lucky its .1 ohm on the money pretty much the RX200/s limit ;p cant wait to vape it

for those specs it should be over .1 but only slightly...just make sure to use 6 wraps/3mm ID and you should be set!

Thank you and I appreciate the support, hopefully next season Ill get even further ;)
