What type of Ribbon, Size wire and size bit helps alot. Thicker/Wider Ribbon needs a outer wrap that can hold the tension. Also pliers and a Vice helps wrapping thicker coils, Ribbon can be a pain since it likes to warp or pop if pulled to hard, it takes some practice but it can be pulled off.
Some from recent builds:

I have the vice and the pliers and all that, have you ever done just a strait staple build with no frames? it seems nearly imposable, even after watching sguidoode on you tube, and that was a 10 ply. and iv seen them all the way up to 15 and 20 ply. i can wrap em if i frame it,but with out the frames, its disaster!lol

Yea I posted one above and have done them many times. It will warp if your outer wrap isnt tight enough and/or if your outer wrap is either too thick-34 and lower gauges or too thin like 44g and higher. You need an outerwrap that can hold the tension while still being pliable enough to not contain space between the the Ribbon and itself. They use specialty tools and other things to wrap those super wide staples, I have no clue what they use and this is why they have the advantage. Start out with less Ribbon and then work your way up, when you get to the point where it wont wrap it should be obvious why.

If you can try and take a pic of the wire afterwards if you still have issues, list the gauges and wire types also.

Tension. While wrapping the coil, you need to pull out on the wire as you wrap it. That's one of the reasons to use the vise, so that the wire will be stable. Bit, screwdriver, jig, whatever in one hand and pliers holding the wire with the other. Pull, and KEEP the tension on the wire as you wrap it.
