New wicks, too much splatter

I am running a .2 ohm, dual coil, 24g ~5 wrap set up on my phenotype l. Every time I re-wick (Japanese cotton) I have a horrible problem with juice splatter. Going straight up into my mouth, but even worse out the air holes. It is very bad. Twice now some has managed (somehow) to hit me in the eye. Burning hot juice. Hitting me on the hands and chin and what not. Has anyone else had this problem? Why is this happening? Never had this issue with the same coil set up on my twisted messes or any other rda. Is there anything I can do? I have turned down the watts from ~75 to ~55, but it still happens just not as bad after a couple seconds of hitting, and I am a cloud junkie. Pic below. I know the coils are a little off but they are working fine besides this issue.
Thanks for any input.

Try fitting a bit more cotton in there. Your wicks look a little loose to me.. My preferred wicking style is called "The Scottish Roll" you can look up some good tutorials online.

The only time I get splatters in my mouth is when I vape 70/30pg, over drip, less cotton, over dripped?

I vape only 70/30 or higher VG. And I can tuck a nice piece of cotton under my coils and vape until dry. I can try to post a picture, but I apologize for the low quality. It's my POS phone.. My Note broke and I buy too much vape crap to get a new one.

This is how I wick. It's almost dry.

And I have the monster drip tip on my Dark Horse. Plus a pretty mean coil. No splats :)

Edit: Play with the lengths of the ends. Just needs to kind of fit & tuck under the coil and touch the deck area. My deck is just very shallow on this RDA. I can still get about 6-7 good pulls off this coil before it starts to lose flavor. But I'm pushing probably about 75 watts on this coil. She gets hot.

I don't think you'll ever not have side leaking problems with the phenotype, it's got huge airflow slots so close to the coils.

Use thicker wicks. When using organic Japanese cotton, cut a strip about 2x the width of the inner diameter of the coil, remove the outside 'skins' and wick. It should be fairly tight, enough to get a little squeak from the coil. Then trim your wicks so they just barely hang while touching the the bottom of the juice well. Your atty is too wet, the juice is boiling instead of vaporizing, and that boiling causes the spit back.

Good suggestions. Yes, I am a chronic over- dripper. The thing is this only happens with new cotton. I do struggle with getting the wick right though so I will try what you suggested. From what you said, I cut my wick a lot thinner but have the ends a lot longer. I feel like when it is that tight I am going to mess up my coils somehow. I'll give it a try

You may also try a wicking method that involes cutting a much larger piece than usual. Making a slight roll and lining it with a bit of juce, then rolling it up tighter and pushing it through your coil. You can use much more cotton this way, but it's compact and thin because of the pre-soak of the juice. I tried it, but found I like the Scottish Roll a bit better. Also, check for hot spots really well before wicking like @VapingCrim said. Should glow evenly from the center out.

I definitely checked for hot spots right before I re wicked. I do a lazy version of pre soaking. I get the wick it to almost where I want it, then drip onto the part that is about to be inside the coil. I kind of "brush it in" but I notice it all soaks in by getting compacted into the coil. Cuts down on my break in time significantly.

It's probably just over-dripping my friend. Happens to me on the Pheno and my other attys when i over-drip. Self control man, self control :p You can also play with the coil positioning as well. If you move em upwards and outwards a little you'll get less splatter out the mouth hole.....so to speak haha

This could be the problem.. If you're going to pre soak, you'll need a good amount of cotton because it really compresses..
