Last night, Nintendo held its first World Championships competition in 25 years, and John Numbers managed to defeat the 15 other contestants to take home the crown.

The participants competed in a number of different Nintendo games, including the newly renamed Super Mario Maker. Cosmo Wright made it to the final round, but ultimately lost against Numbers. However, both were awarded autographed New 3DS XL systems by the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto.

During the tournament, Nintendo made a handful of announcements as well, including the unveiling of a Metroid-esque multiplayer shooter called Blastball and a localized version of Mother for Wii U Virtual Console called EarthBound Beginnings.
