Once Upon a Time: "Mother" Review

Regina's journey over the last four seasons of Once Upon a Time has gone in some remarkable directions, and tonight's episode encapsulated her evolution while also strengthening it. She's walked on the hero side of the line for long enough that it's possible to forget the villain she used to be and watching her crush the groom's heart was a jarring reminder. The move was so cruel it stayed in your head through the entire episode and sort of hovered underneath all of Regina's actions in Storybrooke -- in a good way.

Besides showing Regina's full range as the Evil Queen (and Lana Parrilla's range because wow), the flashback added a lot of context to present day Regina. I've discussed this before, but it's quite impressive when the writers can find ways to tell new stories in the past that not only don't interfere with the established timeline but also enhance it. Managing the canon has to be more challenging with the regular jumping between time periods, but they pull it off and "Mother" was a great example of synergy.
