Season 4 of Once Upon a Time took the characters on quite a ride between Frozen connections, the Queens of Darkness, and the Author. The world of Storybrooke and the Enchanted Forest expanded with the introduction of new characters and the return of familiar faces like August and Ariel. New connections were made, for better or worse, and revelations about the past provided greater insight to characters in the present. Without rehashing every single scene, let's discuss the high and low points of the season.

Once Upon a Time succeeded and faltered in the same area over the course of 22 episodes, and it was a continuation of an issue they had in Season 3: Theming! Not themes as in good vs. evil (more on those in a bit) but theming the plot around a topic like Frozen. The arrival of Elsa and Anna was undeniably fun and had a positive effect on ratings because Frozen fever is a powerful phenomenon. Georgina Haig and especially Elizabeth Lail were charming live-action versions of the royal sisters, and Elizabeth Mitchell mastered the role of the quietly deranged Ingrid. However, they grasped onto the icy plot for too long.
