If you haven’t watched the new trailer for Star Wars Rebels, you really should. There’s all kinds of crazy stuff happening, like a green Kylo Ren lightsaber, a Princess Leia cameo, and the surprising return of Darth Maul.
Darth Maul was a triumphant marketing gimmick. Weeks before Episode I premiered, he was already a star. The Sith Lord’s intense gaze, tattooed face, horned brow, and double bladed lightsaber were plastered over every pre-release promo and had us convinced that this was a villain worthy of Darth Vader’s legendary legacy.
Then the Phantom Menace hit theaters, and while Darth Maul spun most impressively, he fell absolutely flat as a character. In the entirety of Episode 1 he spoke a total of three lines. And despite all that flipping and kicking, he lasted only a few minutes against Obi-Wan Kenobi. The dark Lord was bisected and fell down a giant hole.
