Hello Folks,

The Oumier Wasp Nano was cited as one of the top RDA’s of 2017, certainly among the vaping community for its price and like many I purchased one myself to see what all the fuss was about. Hoping to match their success with the Wasp, Oumier have introduced the latest edition to their line up – The” VLS RDA”.

I have absolutely no idea what VLS stands for but there’s a rocket on it so I’m going with “Versatile Launch System”. Heaven Gifts kindly sent me a sample for the once over and being I failed miserably to drop my review on the Wasp I’m going to be using them side by side and combine both in here .

Specification Overview & What’s in the box

Depends what you’re in the market for here “little or large. Don’t necessarily be deceived though, whilst the VLS is a lot larger than the little nipple that is the Wasp, that little nipple actually houses a large deck.

Wasp
  • Height: 22.5mm
  • Diameter: 22mm
  • Thread: 510
  • Airflow Slots : 2
  • Assembly: 2 Piece Design
  • 1x Wasp Nano RDA
  • 1x Spare kit (3 x spare screws, Spare O-rings, Allen key, BF Pin)
  • 1x Organic Cotton
VLS
  • Height: 45.5mm
  • Diameter: 25mm
  • Thread: 510
  • Airflow Slots : 2
  • Assembly: 4 Piece Design
  • 1x VLS RDA
  • 1x Spare kit (4 x spare screws, Spare O-rings, multi tool, BF Pin)
  • 1x Organic Cotton
Note: Its worth doing a quick search on the cotton provided with the VLS. A member of VU brought it to our community’s attention and it’s safe to say at this stage I won’t be looking to us it! If you google search ”angorabbit cotton mooch” read until your hearts content. In actual fact I rarely use provided cotton with any of the Rebuildable atomisers I get.

Purchase Options

One of the biggest pro’s for the Wasp was its initial price point, In terms of its simplicity vs performance. It’s hard to knock the fact it’s a solid choice for anyone looking to get into squonking or dripping. The VLS enters the market at a slightly higher price, employing a complex system to allow variety to your build approach.

Because the Wasp has been out for some time, there is a larger degree of choice in terms of base metal and top cap finish. Depending on the success of the VLS I’d say it’s safe to assume there will be similar options available in the future.

Build Quality & Assembly Approach

The Wasp is a two piece design with a very low 22.5mm profile. It has 2 O-Rings securing the top cap which offer a decent amount of resistance. When the top cap is placed on the deck it will sit on top of a lip. This stops condensation or excess juice being pushed under the base when dripping, and is my preferred approach for RDA’s.

When you drip straight down the centre you’ll notice (when using the clear PC or Ultem versions the juice will trickle down the inside walls, however being the airflow slots sit snugly against deck posts it will not leak, rather it runs down into the juice-well. I have a strange fixation watching this happen!. You can even turn the top cap slightly past the post and use a needle nose refill bottle to refill that way if you prefer.

It does come with a bottom fill “squonk” pin as well should you have that sort of mod. The wasp is a little bit like the Dr Who’s Tardis, despite its tiny outward size it’s deceptively big on the inside. It manages to squeeze in 2ml of juice, plenty for a good 5 or more pulls before it needs refilling.

(VLS BF pin is on the right)

The VLS is made up of multiple parts you have a base with a removable disc sitting on top of a large peek insulator. The deck itself can be unscrewed from the base for multiple functions; 1) allowing you to access and wick vertical coils easily, 2) creates a sunken juice-well and 3) at the same time allows Oumier to release alternative decks in the future!

45BF97CB-02A5-43D5-A71A-F82B268FB0A9.jpeg
It has a single top cap made from polycarbonate (PC) or Ultem (PEI) and features a beauty ring at the top purely for aesthetics. The multiple airflow holes are positioned at a downward angle matching up with holes on deck posts. Finally it has a separate 810 drip tip.

When it’s all put together the top cap doesn’t sit as snugly as the wasp in fact there is a clear separation cavity between the side airflow holes in the top cap and holes in the deck which is a little abnormal, in fact its impossible to completely close off the airflow on the VLS, you will get a restricted draw at best.

The top cap is held in place by 3 O-Rings again offering decent resistance. It’s the same thing again with the top cap sitting on top of a lip. If you twist it to adjust airflow make sure to go in the same direction to the way the deck is screwed into the base otherwise you might find it loosens.

There are no issues with centre dripping or squonking with that central reservoir, dump it in you’ll be getting nearly double the capacity in here over the wasp, expect a good 9 or so pulls before refilling.

All in all despite their some design differences you can clearly see the natural progression of the design in the decks looking at them side by side.

Machining & Post Screws

Both decks looks like they been in the wars a little if you ask me, perhaps the effect of a tumbler or sand blast to remove burrs from machining process, this does give them a somewhat used look. However both are clean out of the box.

Despite the relatively small size of the Wasps post screws they are solid and can be wrenched down hard to secure the legs. Oumier seemed to have upped their game further with the VLS providing even beefier screws. Both are flathead out of the box (even the spares).

No much separates them here in all honesty they are very similar at this stage, except for the threading on the VLS (between the base and the deck). I found the machining to be a little rough and it takes a while to catch when screwing in.

Build Flexibility and Ease of Use

The Wasp is an absolute doddle to build on and it’s one of its biggest strengths. Offer the coil to the post and just slide the leg over the lip. There’s even a handy little sunken recess to keep the legs in place as you screw them down. When you’re done securing simply snip the excess away from the opposite side and post. That’s it done; it really doesn’t get easier than this.

You could probably fit in a 3.5mm coil at a push but I’ve always used a 3mm, to ensure there enough airflow moving over the coil itself. The deck is only designed for a single horizontal coil, but for its size you’re able to build in a pretty impressively long coil up to 11mm. If you do want fewer wraps it does mean you have to stretch the legs apart in order to reach each post, in which case I found spacing the coil or adding parallel wraps was the best way to go. Due to the way the deck is designed the screws will not bend the legs which leaves for a tidy build finish.

It will take most builds you throw at it and function well. I actually like a lower wattage vape for the Wasp (in the 30’s) so I tend to stick with Fused Clapton’s or simple Parallel wires. I really can’t say much more than this, the WASP is dream to build on.

The VLS is all about versatility, want dual or single coils? Want vertical, horizontal or diagonal positioning? go for it. You’ll spend plenty of time fiddling with options at first until you land on your preferred approach. Despite the VLS’s larger overall size the post width is smaller than the Wasp at approx. 9mm / 6mm (bottom / top).

BF5BA3E0-2A53-436D-BD64-E743B8579E17.jpeg

Depending on the positioning you choose you will always have one of the coil legs being twisted, unless you stick to horizontal only using the bottom posts. In terms of the time it takes to mount; it’s similar to the Wasp for a single horizontal, otherwise you’ll find yourself having to play around a lot longer trying to get everything sitting right, for example;

I first ran it with dual 3mm parallel coils in the horizontal position. Where the posts have different distances apart, I had to bend the legs back over coil in order to keep things equal and to keep the resistance high enough. It’s a giant pain in the ass, and probably needs thinner gauge wire or smaller diameter to make the process easier. You’ll also have wicking at different heights so unless you drip you might get trouble with the top coil keeping up; secondly it’s a tight fit making sure both share enough airflow.

Next I ran just a slightly bigger 3.5mm in a horizontal coil just utilising the bottom post holes. This one is the easiest build approach to accommodate.

1A40EC75-1141-467D-9C74-CFD450916F01.jpeg

Finally I tried the vertical dual coil approach using the stock coils. You can either position these in close together in the centre or pull them to differing degrees right out to the edges of the deck. Sounds a bit crazy doing the latter but you don’t even have to line the top cap up with the post holes to get a great vape. That’s the thing with the VLS it’s a real tinkerer’s RDA you can keep tweaking this until your hearts content.

B926B41E-A4F4-4239-9085-D03DFCF5DD89.jpeg

I don’t think one is necessarily better than the other in this area it’s more down to what you want. If you are after a hassle free simple approach both can accommodate you, if you want versatility then you really are going to be looking at the VLS of the two.

Both are very easy to wick, I use the bottom O-ring as a guide and fold the cotton round onto the deck, squonking or dripping I use the same approach for these RDA’s. In fact with the VLS you can even remove the deck from the base and wick those vertical coils directly from underneath, I’m very impressed with this design.

How’s it Vape?

I’m going to be a little controversial when it comes to the Wasp. In my humble opinion it doesn’t really excel in one or the other (flavour vs clouds) that isn’t to say it’s bad, I just think it’s a balanced single coil RDA that offers slightly above average performance in both areas. I found it makes little difference between dripping and squonking, its airy wide open and a little choppy and noisy the draw. I have to restrict it right up to find the flavour, and due to the very low profile of the top cap and how high the coil has to be positioned it’s a little close to my lips, so I end up using a 510 drip tip on top which makes it look a little goofy.

The VLS is very smooth on the draw even using different coil positions. I found it trickier to restrict airflow though because of that cavity sitting between the deck and the top cap, as I mentioned earlier it’s impossible to actually close it up completely. Both flavour and vapour production are noticeably better than the wasp even running a single coil. It holds more juice when dripping or squonking has a larger usable wattage range (35-120w+). It also comes with a comfortable stock drip tip

I found both offer a decent amount of heat resistance when chain vaping, although the VLS does get hot on the base transferring the heat to the mod, so some sort of thin Ultem disc protector wouldn’t go amiss.

Wasp Pro’s
  • Hassle free to build on
  • Capable of mounting impressively large coils for its size
  • Decent O-rings
  • Diverse number of purchase options and its price
  • Small size, great for single battery Squonkers
  • Can restrict airflow right up or run it as vape it airy
  • Doesn’t get hot
Wasp Cons
  • Noisy draw and a little choppy
  • You’ll probably want to run a 510 drip on top
  • Coil has to be mounted high bringing it close to your mouth

VLS Pro’s
  • Versatile build deck – a tinkerers dream
  • Very Smooth draw
  • Fantastic flavour and decent cloud- im going to be building on this for a long time to come
  • Wide usable wattage range
  • Top cap doesn’t get remotely hot even chain vaping at 120W!
  • Easy to centre drip, holding a central reservoir
  • Decent stock coils provided
  • Decent O-rings
  • Could Possibly have alternative decks released at a later date
VLS Con’s
  • If using vertical coils it will twist one of the legs
  • Base gets does get hot – needs an Ultem disc
  • Cannot really restrict draw
  • dodgy cotton provided with the RDA
  • Threading between the deck and base could have been better
Final Conclusion

For its price I still think the Wasp is hard to pass up on especially if you just want to give squonking a go. Coil mounting doesn’t get much easier than this. It will house simple wraps or a wide set of staples depending on what you want from it. It’s a low profile stealth looking product, although what it kicks out certainly won’t be. I do think there are better single coil RDA’s out there though but possibly not at this price (for an authentic)!

18FA8A4A-ECEE-41DC-8B3D-89D15E4B27D5.jpeg

Whilst I think the VLS has much better flavour and vapour production, I think it’s fair to say it’s a little more specialised and won’t be to everyone’s tastes (certainly those that like a tight draw). To some I expect they’ll see it as a lot of fart arsing about, for me though it’s what makes it unique, and of course you could just slap in a single coil and go for it. Out of the two the VLS is firmly my favourite even in a single coil only configuration, a very impressive RDA

Enjoyed your review and was happy to read the comparison with the Wasp. VSL is on the wishlist. Do you overlay your top wicks for a vertical build or do you clip just above the coil(s)?

 Thank you very much Letitia:oops:

For the vertices it sorta goes like this.... remove the base and you can position the coils through the hole in the deck

482D6896-BBDE-45E6-82E3-E40AE3FC3E0F.jpeg

Once you’re happy snip away the leads

Pull the cotton through (I loop round and wick both under the base)

525569AF-4073-4F37-8E10-E5C66CAC12A1.jpeg

Snip in between the two coils to separate the loop and push the cotton up through a bit (make more of a clearing for squonking)
B811C934-B4C9-4FF5-9A26-261BEFBFECE8.jpeg

Now space out cotton on top of the deck (yeah got a bit carried away with cotton overkill in the background ....oops)
F3E40E2F-67A6-4CE9-9A7B-2EE30C3D0D20.jpeg

Screw base back on (just double check everything underneath one more time before you do)

snip away at the top I make sure there’s a clear space for the airflow to come up between the coils

Juice her up and jobs a gooden
