Hello Folks,
The Oumier Wasp Nano was cited as one of the top RDA’s of 2017, certainly among the vaping community for its price and like many I purchased one myself to see what all the fuss was about. Hoping to match their success with the Wasp, Oumier have introduced the latest edition to their line up – The” VLS RDA”.
I have absolutely no idea what VLS stands for but there’s a rocket on it so I’m going with “Versatile Launch System”. Heaven Gifts kindly sent me a sample for the once over and being I failed miserably to drop my review on the Wasp I’m going to be using them side by side and combine both in here .
Specification Overview & What’s in the box
Depends what you’re in the market for here “little or large. Don’t necessarily be deceived though, whilst the VLS is a lot larger than the little nipple that is the Wasp, that little nipple actually houses a large deck.
Wasp
Purchase Options
One of the biggest pro’s for the Wasp was its initial price point, In terms of its simplicity vs performance. It’s hard to knock the fact it’s a solid choice for anyone looking to get into squonking or dripping. The VLS enters the market at a slightly higher price, employing a complex system to allow variety to your build approach.
Because the Wasp has been out for some time, there is a larger degree of choice in terms of base metal and top cap finish. Depending on the success of the VLS I’d say it’s safe to assume there will be similar options available in the future.
Wasp
Build Quality & Assembly Approach
The Wasp is a two piece design with a very low 22.5mm profile. It has 2 O-Rings securing the top cap which offer a decent amount of resistance. When the top cap is placed on the deck it will sit on top of a lip. This stops condensation or excess juice being pushed under the base when dripping, and is my preferred approach for RDA’s.
When you drip straight down the centre you’ll notice (when using the clear PC or Ultem versions the juice will trickle down the inside walls, however being the airflow slots sit snugly against deck posts it will not leak, rather it runs down into the juice-well. I have a strange fixation watching this happen!. You can even turn the top cap slightly past the post and use a needle nose refill bottle to refill that way if you prefer.
It does come with a bottom fill “squonk” pin as well should you have that sort of mod. The wasp is a little bit like the Dr Who’s Tardis, despite its tiny outward size it’s deceptively big on the inside. It manages to squeeze in 2ml of juice, plenty for a good 5 or more pulls before it needs refilling.
(VLS BF pin is on the right)
The VLS is made up of multiple parts you have a base with a removable disc sitting on top of a large peek insulator. The deck itself can be unscrewed from the base for multiple functions; 1) allowing you to access and wick vertical coils easily, 2) creates a sunken juice-well and 3) at the same time allows Oumier to release alternative decks in the future!
It has a single top cap made from polycarbonate (PC) or Ultem (PEI) and features a beauty ring at the top purely for aesthetics. The multiple airflow holes are positioned at a downward angle matching up with holes on deck posts. Finally it has a separate 810 drip tip.
When it’s all put together the top cap doesn’t sit as snugly as the wasp in fact there is a clear separation cavity between the side airflow holes in the top cap and holes in the deck which is a little abnormal, in fact its impossible to completely close off the airflow on the VLS, you will get a restricted draw at best.
The top cap is held in place by 3 O-Rings again offering decent resistance. It’s the same thing again with the top cap sitting on top of a lip. If you twist it to adjust airflow make sure to go in the same direction to the way the deck is screwed into the base otherwise you might find it loosens.
There are no issues with centre dripping or squonking with that central reservoir, dump it in you’ll be getting nearly double the capacity in here over the wasp, expect a good 9 or so pulls before refilling.
All in all despite their some design differences you can clearly see the natural progression of the design in the decks looking at them side by side.
Machining & Post Screws
Both decks looks like they been in the wars a little if you ask me, perhaps the effect of a tumbler or sand blast to remove burrs from machining process, this does give them a somewhat used look. However both are clean out of the box.
Despite the relatively small size of the Wasps post screws they are solid and can be wrenched down hard to secure the legs. Oumier seemed to have upped their game further with the VLS providing even beefier screws. Both are flathead out of the box (even the spares).
No much separates them here in all honesty they are very similar at this stage, except for the threading on the VLS (between the base and the deck). I found the machining to be a little rough and it takes a while to catch when screwing in.
