Our Flag Means Death, the HBO Max comedy series about a bunch of very earnest pirates has finally been officially renewed for a second season.
The first season centers around rich dandy-turned-pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby), who struggles with basically every aspect of pirating until he encounters the infamous Blackbeard (Taika Watiti) and strikes up an unusual friendship that eventually grows into much more.

One of the reasons fans have been so interested in a renewal is because of the massive cliffhanger season one ends on. After Ed and Stede share a romantic moment at the Academy, Stede has a crisis of faith and abandons Ed to go back to his old life.
Ed takes over The Revenge once again, mourns his breakup, and begins going back to his old ruthless ways. But Stede, realizing how unhappy he and Mary are in their marriage still, collaborates with her to fake his own death so they can return to their respective passions. The final moment of season one involves Stede coming across his stranded and starving crew on an island as he rows out to sea in a tiny boat in search of Ed and The Revenge.
With the two lovers in turmoil, the crew stranded, and Ed being Blackbeard again, there's a lot of potential conflict brewing on the open seas, and that doesn't even mention the budding collaboration with Jim and Spanish Jackie and the possibility of five of the Siete Gallos still on the loose.

There's no telling what hijinks will ensue in season 2, nor do we know precisely when to expect it, and its somewhat delayed renewal announcement indicates they likely haven't begun filming yet.
We loved the first season, praising its inversion of pirate lore tropes and its ability to land the emotional story at its core.
