Outlander: "Lallybroch" Review

After traveling around Scotland and to Castle Leoch, it's finally time to see where Jamie Fraser grew up. The opening scenes switched from a cozy hearth with sleeping dogs to the sweeping landscapes of Scotland and besides being absolutely gorgeous, it said much about the theme and provided a sense of scale for Jamie's homecoming. The juxtaposition gave the moment when Lallybroch appeared on the horizon more meaning, and it was a lovely example of how to combine the eye candy aspect of the setting with storytelling.

We've been building up to going to Lallybroch since the wedding when Jamie used part of the key to his home to create Claire's wedding ring. They've effectively communicated how close his home is to his heart so when he arrived and it wasn't a happy reunion, it was a shock. Jamie was an absolute jerk to his sister, and though we've seen him show anger towards Claire, the moment gave the character a different edge. It was the first time he's truly been unlikable, and I like seeing another side even if I wanted to slap him on Jenny's behalf. The flashbacks -- which were edited into the narrative in a weird way -- gave Jamie's strong reaction some context but didn't excuse it.
