Legendary Comics is set to release Pacific Rim: Blackout, a graphic novel that serves as a prequel to Netflix's animated series Pacific Rim: The Black. IGN can exclusively debut a new preview of this upcoming release, which focuses on Max Martini's character Herc Hansen.

Pacific Rim: Blackout is written by Cavan Scott (Star Wars: The High Republic) and illustrated by Nelson Dániel (TMNT). The book's title references Operation Blackout, a military strategy used in the Pacific Rim universe to deal with unwinnable conflicts with the monstrous kaiju. When Operation Blackout is enacted, citizens are given five days to evacuate a region before it's razed to the ground. The graphic novel explores Herc's desperate fight to keep Australia from becoming the latest casualty in this seemingly never-ending war.

Pacific Rim: Blackout is available to preorder now and will be released as a standalone graphic novel on Tuesday, February 22. However, fans also have the option of picking up the Pacific Rim Ultimate Omnibus, a hardcover which collects Blackout along with all of Legendary's previous comics - Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero, Pacific Rim: Tales from the Drift, Pacific Rim: Aftermath and Pacific Rim: Amara.

The first season of Pacific Rim: The Black debuted on Netflix in March 2021. In IGN's Season 1 review, Matt Fowler wrote, "Pacific Rim: The Black may take a few episodes to kick in fully, but once you wholly acclimate yourself to these visuals and this tone -- which is a bit more emotionally catastrophic (and less popcorn-y) than the films -- it's a rewarding continuation, and extrapolation, of the franchise."

Netflix has renewed Pacific Rim: The Black for a second season, but the streamer has yet to reveal a release date. For now, brush up on all the big new TV shows and seasons releasing in 2022.
