Remembering how superb Penny Dreadful's Season 1 flashback episode was, I was happy to see the format return here in Season 2, which has been in need of some grounding. So far, Evelyn Poole's hunt for Vanessa has felt spooky (certainly that doll scene last week was good for a "blech!" or two) but also repetitive. We're still playing the "devil craves Vanessa" card and that's making Season 2 feel more like Season "1B."
If the witches are to truly stand out this year, we need to know more about them and how they differ from the other horrors that Team Dreadful has already faced down. Because the events back in the Season 2 premiere may have rocked Vanessa to her core, but they didn't do the same for many viewers. So we were in desperate need of a reason why that particular premiere attack differed from every other harrowing event the poor woman's been through. Last week's episode was a step in the right direction as it had Evelyn and her coven act more witch-like, but it was this week's "The Nightcomers" that really drove home what the big threat was, greatly helping root Season 2 in the process.
