Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...
Following last week's excellent flashback episode starring Patti LuPone comes Penny Dreadful's...lightest episode to date? In the very least, the most comedic. Almost to a fault, though not quite fully debilitating. Sure, there was a big witch attack at the end - in Ser Malcolm's mansion, no less - but until those final minutes Dreadful sort of took a breather. Some of it great, some of it shaky.
Firstly, we have to talk about Vanessa going shopping with Victor. A scene that really did play like it was from a different show. Though, I'd say, mostly from Victor's end. Vanessa was a pleasantly feisty button-pusher, the likes of which we saw a lot of back in Season 1 (in fact, it was nice to see her return to that for a short spell), while Victor was sort of a stuttering mess. Naturally, he was very uncomfortable, but a lot of his lines played like they were straight out of a sitcom. Like the way he fumbled while attempting to lie about his "cousin" and how he answered "Precisely five feet, five inches" when asked her height. It was a bit too much, honestly.
