Penny Dreadful: "Memento Mori" Review

Though this week's Penny Dreadful, "Memento Mori," lacked damaged lead heroes Ethan and Vanessa, it still stood out as being one of the most revealing, suspenseful episodes of the series to date. Providing us with a glimpse at Dreadful's assorted "B Team" while Vanessa sought sanctuary out in the countryside, this chapter not only brought Season 1's unseen "master" (aka Dracula) back into the storyline mix, but it revealed Dorian's portrait, killed off Angelique, spun out Lily's madness, and saw Sir Malcolm, essentially, free himself from Evelyn's enchantment.

The whole "Dracula being the Devil's brother" item was an important reveal for me. At the top of the season, I admit to being confused about who the "master" was, as two malevolent forces could claim that name. Obviously, the vampires and witches were coming from the same dark place and emboldened with the same evil mission, but things seemed to be totally centered on Lucifer, which made me wonder about the foreign aristocrat who Mina took up with back in the first year storyline. It appeared as though everything, including those vamps, was the Devil's doing. And while the first season placed the vampire storyline and the demon possession storyline in separate corners, Season 2 seemed to merge them. And not in a very lucid way.
