AAAHHHHH!!! Creepy dolls with human baby hearts in them! Belch! Stupid witches!

Yes, Penny Dreadful's "Verbis Diablo" improved on last week's season premiere by slowing the story down a bit, allowing the witches to feel more like witches, and introducing a new love triangle twist on the Bride of Frankenstein mythos.

Not that Hecate didn't go nuts on a train and slaughter two parents and their newborn child, but Evelyn's methodical stalking of Ser Malcolm (set up in last season's finale) added a layer of bewitching suspense that straight-up monster attacks just can't. In the premiere, the witches beset upon Vanessa and Ethan in a very similar manner to last year's vampires. In fact, honestly, until Vanessa said that the creatures they faced were "very different" from vampires, I had no idea. I mean, it would make sense that minions of the devil should have a similar look, but the witch attack in the carriage played very much like a vamp ambush.
