Hi there, I am a 25 year hard core smoker and i HAVE to stop! I love smoking though :(

I have read what i can for the last week on different types of pens, mods, ego's etc.

I have had a go on different peoples ego's but not much on the mod boxes, although I have a feeling these will suit me best.

I live in New Zealand in a small town so can't rock up to somewhere and try a bunch of stuff. But I am willing to spend up to $120 USD including everything i need and hopefully including at least 3-4 juices to try.

I have read today - vaping 360 and vaping insider for "best starters of 2017".

I am seriously looking at Eleaf iStick 30W (but don't think I want to sub ohm - i'm not into huge clouds - just a regular vapour like smoking) so not sure what tank to put with that.
I also like the look of the eleaf istick pico 75w TC starter kit - but can't seem to find one in stock that offers a price like VapourDNA does of $40.....
I am also looking at Joytech Evic AIO - but these two mods are so different from each other....

Today I have looked around at mt baker vapour, vaping direct, vapour DNA (where everything is 'out of stock').
and now after FIVE fkn hours i still haven't even got to ejuice flavours.

There just seems too much to choose from and I don't know what's best for my needs really... i just want a good throat hit, no leakage, no dry burns, moderate vapour and not to feel like I"d rather have a cigarette.

Any help would be most warmly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and kind consideration of my plight - that I'm still smoking away $100 a week and my health is not good.

P.S. I realise that there may be many of you too who have a LOT of varying choices, I hope though that within the next two hours I can buy something that everyone agrees on :)

SMOK AL85 Alien Baby 85W TC Starter Kit
has great reviews... but DO i want big clouds? Why do people want big clouds? I kind of feel they would be a bit interfering of others space........

I think the IStick Pico would suit you, it is up to 75 watts but you don't have to use that if you do not want to but will be their in case you change your mind in the future. Also buy good batteries like LG Samsung or Sony and make sure they are 25 amp rating, this comes most times with the Melo 3 tank and I think you would be good to go with this set up, I love mine and have used it for a year.

You're on the right track. Try looking at fasttech, gearbest and DHGate. They all have prices similar to vapordna.

You're starting basically the same way most of us did. I used to vape a lot of MTL (mouth to lung, most like smoking) then moved on to direct lung after my lungs had healed enough to allow me to take a deep breath.

The eleaf Pico starter kit with a melo 3 tank is really good for beginners.

The Aio is a nice all in one.

I prefer the all-in-ones. That's just me. Vaping is very subjective. But if you want to open it, fill it, vape it without dealing with tanks an all-in-one is a good start. My vote would be for the aio.

You might look into something that has a built in battery to start. Charge, fill, vape.

The joyetech penguin, Surion Air, eleaf icare are great mtl, easy to use kits. And cheap to start with.

Hope you find what you're looking for. I smoked for 33 hard core years 2 pad. I loved smoking. Never intended to quit but vaping did it for me.

Greetings rougetete, and welcome to VU.

I got your post on my profile and wanted to followup in your thread with my response, so I will respond with my opinion on some of your questions first.

i HAVE to stop! I love smoking though
The first step is to want to stop smoking, no matter the reason. Ask your self the question of "why" you love smoking. Is it the flavor, the smell, the feeling of the "rush" that you get? Then ask yourself "what are all these 4000+ chemicals doing to your body and organs"?

If it is the smell that you enjoy, I PROMISE you that once you have quit smoking you will NOT enjoy that smell anymore.
I've been off the cigs for 10 months now. The smell of a smoker is quite rank and I now understand why people would give me so much "guff" for being a smoker and saying that I stank. Now I get it ... Short story -- I got in the elevator at work the other day and two people (smokers) got in the elevator with me (co workers). WOW! The rank smell that was emitting from their cloths and breath was outrageous! I've been trying to get them to try vaping for a couple of months now, but they are just not ready to quit.

If it is the flavor or "rush", these can be accomplished with vaping and the selection of juice that you choose. Juices come in all variations of flavors, they will completely blow you away with how they taste... mmmm... damn good. If the "rush", the nicotine level in the juice will help accomplish this.

Ok, on to good "starter" devices.

There are MANY out there that would be good starting devices, so I can only give you what I did to quit smoking. I will caution you though, there are many packages out there marked "starter kit", but they are NOT meant for new vapors that are trying to get off the cigs. Example being the AL85 that you posted. This is not meant to be a "starter" for someone getting of the cigs. This is more driven to the "cloud chaser" due to the type of tank that comes with the unit. The MOD itself is awesome, but the tank is not a beginners tank and you will feel like you are shoving a massive amount of vapor into your lungs and feel like your choking.

My recommendation would be to get a tank that is more MTL (Mouth to Lung). These work really well for people trying to get off the cigs, as they vapor flow is more like the "draw" of the cigs. I personally started with the Aspire ET BVC Clearomizer. They are really cheap and the coils are as well. You won't "gush" through the juice as you would with the Big Baby Beast (juice guzzler tank), and you will feel more like your smoking. I then moved up to a Kanger Toptank Mini with the .50Ω coils. This tank was a good MTL style tank, but got me moving into the DL (Direct Lung) style tanks, which I rather enjoy this style now. Work into that though, it takes some getting used to.

The MOD that you choose really depends on a lot of factors. There are MODS with built in batteries (you can't remove them), then you have MODs that have removable batteries. I started with a built in battery MOD that was the Eleaf iStick 30W. I quickly outgrew this MOD. I then stepped into the Eleaf PICO with a single 18650 battery. This MOD became a very good fit in how and what I needed in a MOD. Easily placed in pocket (locked), easily change out batteries, slim design (easily concealed in hand), etc... I still use this MOD often when out and about.

IF you get a good MTL tank, you will want to start out with a higher nicotine level. I started with 12mg/ml juice on the Aspire ET-BVC tank. Once I moved to the Kanger tank, I stepped down to the 6mg/ml juice. I'm not using 3mg/ml juices for everything.

On the quitting smoking --- I personally believe that you should not push yourself to quit. Don't think that you have to stop smoking immediately when you pickup / start vaping. It took me two weeks of vaping and smoking, slowly smoking less and less before I left the cigs for good. It took my wife 6 months.
Everyone is different. No one is the same and can quit the same. There are others here that believe (and will forcefully push) you should stop immediately because they did. I say good for them, but it's not for everyone.

hi phantomop thanks SO MUCH
I've just been watching the eleaf pico 75 review.... it looks ok to me.. what do you think about this for a first choice? I wasn't sure what you were saying about that as a first choice.... sorry! I did look at the Kanger Toptank Mini with the .50Ω coils as well... so i'm trying to make a choice between these too now. I just know i want a good throat hit and a decent amount of vapour on the exprie... if that makes sense?

However when i did a price compare on the eleaf picos... prices are all over the place and especially the DH gate or whatever that is... im imagining that there are devices that are not true to the name - clones i guess, so not really sure how to tell about that?

If you could recommend your fav place to buy device and juices from that would be awesome too.

I do understand about the stopping smoking... infact 5 years ago i actually did buy my first vape - a fat ego pen, but after it broke everything had moved and changed so quickly i just picked up the cigs again.... so i am ready to stop...

Again, thanks so much for getting back to me!! :)

Makes complete sense to me ... I had to have that as well.

The PICO is a very good starting out MOD that will work with you for some time. It goes all the way up to 75W (max), which you won't get to that level for some time... I still prefer to vape around 60W.

If you could recommend your fav place to buy device and juices from that would be awesome too.
You said you were from New Zealand, so I would personally recommend Fasttech or Gearbest. I have no experience with DHGate.
I have ordered from both of the others and have always received the product that I wanted.

When searching for product from these two vendors, use the keyword "Authentic" --- this will sort out the "clone" crap.

Here are some links to genuine product from each vendor.

Eleaf PICO -- Fasttech GearBest

If you get the Eleaf PICO Kit, the Melo III tank is a good starter MTL tank and can do basic DL (Direct Lung). The high ohm coils (1.0 > 1.5Ω) are MTL coils. The .50Ω are more DL. The Melo III tanks also take the Apsire Coils which are KICK ASS coils. Read my other post that you found and I have links to the compatible coils for Melo > Aspire.

As for Juice --- I really don't have a lot of "out of the US" places to buy juice from. I actually DIY (make my own) as it is so much cheaper, but takes time to learn. I would have to research to find places that will ship to New Zealand.

If you go with a Eleaf PICO (mod or kit) ... you have to purchase an 18650 battery. They do NOT come with one. I also would recommend purchasing two. One in the MOD, one on the charger.

The Nitecore D2 2-Bay makes a really good dual battery charger.

PLEASE!!! DO NOT PURCHASE THE PURPLE EFEST BATTERIES!!!!

Only get authentic LG, SAMSUNG, SONY batteries. In order of "my" preference.

Samsung 30Q --- every day / all day battery
LG HG2 --- every day / all day battery
Sony VTC5a -- used in my lower ohm MODs and builds.

Great I'm going with the pico then. I did used to buy juice way back then from mount baker vapour... it seems many places do ship internationally.. but i don't know what is good juice or bad... I've spent the week and practically ALL of today focusing on the best device to buy.

So with the pico, should i buy a battery recharger aswell? and about how many coils does one go through in a week, and also about how much juice for a PAD smoker?

I will go back and look at the links for the coils and batteries you mentioned :)

Very subjective to the person and how much you enjoy vaping.

With that said.... I was going through 1-2 coils p/week with the Aspire coils, and between 30-60ml of juice once I was fully off the cigs.

Check these guys out for Juice --- https://vapershero.com/

I really like their juice and they are VU members / authorized vendor.
I'm not sure if they will ship international, but check with Brian and ask him. They might just do it.

@vapershero

So do i just ask for brian and say I"m a member here?

I've found VU to be quite a helpful community and I've enjoyed returning the knowledge I've gained from everyone here.

If you come up with other questions during your journey to get away from the cigs, don't hesitate to ask away.

Hi sorry to bother you again, I do need to know about the coils or atomisers for this pico... the one i'm looking at comes with a 0.3 ohm but i'd also like a 1.5 - you said aspire are the best... but can i just choose any aspire within the frange of 0.5ohm up to 1.5? Sorry, i'm getting myself confused again :(

Stay away from gearbest and fasttech as well as the eleaf products I haven't heard anything good about eleaf after 6 months use. Starting I would get the some alien kit it comes with a good tank and the mod itself is very reliable and has room to grow over time watt wise as you progress into vaping

Yes, as long as the coils match the atomizer....Starting out you may like the 1.5 ohm coils better if you mouth to lung the vapor....similar to smoking a cig.

Like @PhantomOp - I've had great experience with Eleaf products and buy from FastTech a few times a month for a couple of years with no problems

The Alien kit is not suitable for the vast majority of new vapers

That's your expierence to many people have ended up waiting months on end for their orders. How exactly is the alien mod not suitable for beginners? Its a solid device it has low watt settings for beginning visible display of both batteries and has enough wattage for the vaper to grow through experience. Eleaf mods are shotty have a tendency to give up within 6 months several of their devices have been known to short out causing the chip to melt and even catch on fire.

My Isticks are over two years old and I still use them at work - been dropped on the concrete floor, flooded with juice, you name it, they keep working.

My experience is not unique

The Alien Kit and the Baby Beast are real juice guzzlers, very low ohm atomizer. As the OP stated they did not wish to chase clouds and vapes MTL, totally an inappropriate setup to begin with.

Also hearing a lot of chatter on the forum about Alien screens crapping out indecently early

As for FastTech, the poster is in New Zealand, and will have to wait for the mail no matter how you slice it

If you want your order from Fast Tech fast, make sure you order items that are "in stock"

If an item says "style" such as Goon style atomizer, it is a clone

If it says authentic, it is authentic

These coils are not compatible (that i'm aware of) with the Melo III tank.

These were always my "go to" Aspire coils.
The Aspire EVO coils are also a compatible coil and give very good flavor / vapor production.

Here is the Aspire Atlantis (1.0Ω) coils.

Here is the Aspire Triton (1.8Ω) coils.

Here is the link to the Aspire Atlantis coils and the compatible tanks.

well, I went with the eleaf pico in the end and got some juices from wild vapour(?) and had to buy batteries from here in NZ for some reason they are not allowed to be shipped from overseas.

We have only just started getting juices into nz that have nicotine in them as it was illegal... sometimes we are so slow in some things!!
I believe i have a good supply of different coils ohms but man $200 bucks laters.... ouch!
Thank you for your help and input everyone - heres to being smoke/stink/poor free in a few weeks :) :) xx

Just don't buy Smok, period. ;)
Well at least stay away from their super crazy tanks especially if you're completely new to vaping.
However their Spirals Plus Tank is a good MTL tank and gives an awesome vape at only 24 watts.

Well at least stay away from their super crazy tanks especially if you're completely new to vaping.
However their Spirals Plus Tank is a good MTL tank and gives an awesome vape at only 24 watts.
Personally, I, am meticulously staying away from any and all tanks, no matter what brand they are. I currently own 14 atomizers. All of them RDAs. No clones. But if you want a good MTL tank, just grab the Merlin Mini.

I'm seeming to be drawn on board with that as well. Don't get me wrong some can use tanks and do well enough, find their groove in vaping. Not attempting to steer a new vaper away from tanks.

For myself though, tried the tanks for a good while. They worked, still didn't quite feel as though they offered me quite what I wanted. A friend encouraged me to come vaping underground from another forum, also encouraged me to try squonking & RDAs.

I have now been RDA brainwashed, if it isn't an RDA I don't want it. It is a lot better quality vaping experience all the way around, imho. I buy mostly clone RDas for the economy of it, yet will buy authentic if/when able. Yep, I'm a frugal Fred.

By the by, smoked roughly 35-37 years here, moderately though, I now vape only and yes moderately still it seems. If I can quite cigarettes, likely anyone can. I've even given up on sneaking A cigarette every three to four months, can no longer do it, get sick.

To each their own.
Just trying to keep in mind the original poster is a brand new vapor. So RDA/RTA/RDTA in my opinion are going to be more than they could handle in most cases.
I know they got a Pico but they never said what tank they got.Or I missed that part of this thread somehow...I blame the beer!
So I'm going to toss in my further 2 cents.

Vape Rule #1 Always have a back up!
My best advice for new vapers is.
Don't just get 1 setup for your first buy.Either buy 2 or buy a different slightly less expensive alternative.
Say for this situation a Vaporesso Drizzle Kit.As a backup setup.
It costs like $24 comes with a mod/device & a tank.
Is it the absolute best thing ever?
Nope...but at some point you will forget to charge your device. At which point you'll be glad you have another setup that is handy.Otherwise you will wind up waiting for the battery to charge and have nothing to vape on.Not a good situation for a new vaper to be in.Trust I've been there.
I've been vaping a few years now and still forget to keep my go to setups charged up.Which is why I have back ups for my backups at this point.Heck I even have an (In Case of Emergency) setup.

I agree. I have several "just in case" set ups. Combined they all cost me ...about $22. Traded for one. The other 2 were $11 shipped I think.

I also carry a Surion Air in my wallet. Just in case my just in case mods get messed up. Or confiscated or whatever.

I'm taking no chances.

Yes, obviously. Point taken.

I know. But I also know I would probably have completely abandoned vaping, and would now be back to smoking cigarettes, if I hadn't known anything about RDAs... so for me, personally, vaping isn't what got me off smoking, but instead, vaping on an RDA is. For others, it might be vaping on a Cleito 120. Just not for me.

For me, personally, it would have been the absolute most catastrophic thing ever. A useless paperweight, accompanied by a fatal conclusion of "vaping just isn't for me─ergo, I probably never will quit smoking cigarettes".

I bought six VTC5A batteries together with my RX2/3 instead of buying only three (and of course I also bought a separate battery charger to go with that... because charging your batteries inside your mod is simply asking for trouble). I had already been vaping for a whole month before I finally got my second mod, the RX300 (and an additional two VTC5A batteries).

Heck I even have an (In Case of Emergency) setup.

Got two regulated Istikz, a regulated Smok M22, then I've a bunch of ARO, T-Dux 3 tanks, ... the "all else" kit is a few of the Mach 10 special $1 buy kits. 24mg/ml nicotine in the Mach 10 kits is way too high for me but if I must then, I shall.

Think my next big splurge is going to be finding some kind of regulated squonk kit / mod. Might even look into one of those DNA 75 chipped ones. Sure, I'm alright using mechanical. There's times where a regulated is more appropriate.

Still looking for my backups of Lenny Bruce, Johnny Carson, Robin Williams, Sir Terry Pratchett, Hide (from X Japan), Spanky.
