What do you get when you strip that magical, lightning-in-a-bottle clash of ideas between horror director Tobe Hooper and force of nature Steven Spielberg from 1982’s original Poltergeist? Well, it turns out you get a pretty garden-variety haunted house movie; and here we are at Gil Kenan’s 2015 reboot.
The original Poltergeist was a scary film, but it was also a clever one. It reveled in messing with the Freeling family's creature comforts - their TVs, their toys, that big, climbable tree in their sprawling backyard - and in the process drove a satirical skewer into the heart of the cosy American middle class. Don’t look under your soft, warm bed, the movie told us, because that toy you were always a little wary of may have just become sentient and murderous.
