PlayStation 4 and 5 users can play online for free this weekend as Sony celebrates Valentine's Day.

A PlayStation Plus paid subscription is usually required to play multiplayer games online but from February 12 to 14 users can enjoy the service free of charge, Sony announced on its website.

In its official announcement PlayStation said: "Who will you team up with this weekend? Share the multiplayer love this Valentine's Day."

The free period will last from 12:01 AM on February 12 to 11:59 PM on February 14, seemingly in local time as PlayStation didn't specify any time zones. Users will still require the actual games to play online of course, as the PlayStation Plus monthly free games won't be available despite the weekend offer.

While playing a competitive game for Valentine's Day weekend might not be the most romantic thing in the world, there are plenty of co-op games to try as well.

For some recommendations, Deathloop on PS5 was nominated for IGN's 2021 Game of the Year. We said it was a "masterpiece", as "Deathloop encases fun investigation work and satisfying combat in a unique time loop mechanic to create a tremendously satisfying adventure."

Final Fantasy XIV won IGN's Best Ongoing Game of 2021, and we said its Shadowbringers expansion was "amazing", as it only "further solidified XIV's status as one of the greatest Final Fantasy games ever made."

We also gave our PUBG: Battlegrounds review a 2022 update, saying the current, free-to-play version of the game was "great," because its "unique focus on massive zones and realistic simulation remains a lot of fun."
