Much like a detective solving a murder, mystery anime Ranpo Kitan: Game of Laplace struggles at first to fit some of its puzzle pieces together. Much of the macabre picture it begins to develop in its first episode is beautifully melancholic yet exciting and intriguing, but the underdeveloped protagonist doesn't seem to fit at all — not yet, anyway.

The episode opens with protagonist Kobayashi walking through a dream-like, greyed-out city among greyed-out silhouettes, apparently being followed by a brightly colored butterfly. It very effectively sets the ominous tone for what's to come. After the opening theme (with appropriately dark lyrics that reminded me of my middle school emo phase, in a good way), Kobayashi wakes up in his middle school classroom alone, holding bloody saw. At the front of the room is the teacher, horribly dismembered and missing his head. It's clear that Kobayashi has been framed for the murder. The police call in 17-year-old prodigy detective Akechi, who gives off some serious L-from-Death-Note vibes, to investigate.
