Reliability and Safety after a 16850 IMR Battery being shorted

Hi Guys,

I purchased a couple LGDBHE221865 (LG 18650HE2) IMR Batteries a while back and they have worked superbly. Since then I have received some Efest 30A 2100mAh and have several sony's VTC4 and VTC5 on order.

Recently I received a faulty clone mechanical mod that did not isolate the floating pin and actually shorted the battery, the battery was shorted for about 8-10secs before I noticed the mechanical mod getting warm on the outside, I quickly unscrewed the bottom of the mod to break the short, the battery took around 5mins to actually cooldown even after the short was created, since then I haven't used the battery in fear of the battery failing..

So my question is, does a 8-10 secs battery short damage the battery that it could become a safety issue. I've put the battery up to a volt meter and the battery reads 3.90v, so whats your thoughts should this battery be discarded?

For the price of a replacement, its not worth finding out.

If the battery didn't go nuclear, it most likely is ok but it's life has been shortened. The internal resistance is most likely much higher now than it was before the short so it will probably get warmer during use than it used to. Running the battery hot will continue to build resistance in the battery higher and higher over time and will be a path of diminishing returns.

A 8-10 second short is a long one for a lithium battery, I would toss it to make sure your face stays beautiful

Yep, I think I will discard them... is it best to use a battery drop off point in supermarkets or is placing them in my outside bin considered dangerous? Normally I just discharge batteries in my bin, but these are standard AA's and not high cap batteries.

You should drop lithium batts in a bucket of salt water for a week or so to slowly discharge them to zero then toss them. Most people do toss them in the trash though. Maybe a battery recycling place near you too.

I agree. Just have it recyled and get a new battery.
