Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring are among twenty-five movies that have been added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry this year.

Among the twenty-five films chosen for preservation are classic titles from the likes of directors Robert Altman, Wes Craven, Alfred Hitchcock, and Peter Jackson.

“Films help reflect our cultural history and creativity — and show us new ways of looking at ourselves — though movies haven’t always been deemed worthy of preservation,” said Librarian of Congress, Carla Hayden. “The National Film Registry will preserve our cinematic heritage, and we are proud to add twenty-five more films this year.”

The National Film Preservation Act dictates that the Librarian of Congress must choose twenty-five films each year, which are “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant (as well as at least ten years old) to be added to the National Film Registry. There are currently 825 films in the registry.

The full list of this year’s additions is as follows:

  • Chicana (1979)
  • Cooley High (1975)
  • Evergreen (1965)
  • Flowers and Trees (1932)
  • The Flying Ace (1926)
  • Hellbound Train (1930)
  • Jubilo (1919)
  • The Long Goodbye (1973)
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
  • The Murder of Fred Hampton (1971)
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
  • Pink Flamingos (1972)
  • Requiem-29 (1970)
  • Return of the Jedi (1983)
  • Richard Pryor: Live in Concert (1979)
  • Ringling Brothers Parade Film (1902)
  • Selena (1997)
  • Sounder (1972)
  • Stop Making Sense (1984)
  • Strangers on a Train (1951)
  • WALL-E (2008)
  • The Watermelon Woman (1996)
  • What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962)
  • Who Killed Vincent Chin? (1987)
  • The Wobblies (1979)

Each year, the Librarian of Congress discusses proposed additions with the National Film Preservation Board among others. More than 6,100 films, submitted by members of the public, were considered.

Notably, several movies depicting racial violence were chosen for inclusion this year:

“We have always looked at the range of films, those that are entertaining and inspiring, but also those films that raise more difficult kinds of questions, those that get us to recognize that films are documents of our social and political history and that their preservation is absolutely essential if we’re going to look honestly at our past,” said chair of the National Film Preservation Board, Jacqueline Stewart.

Nominations for the 2022 additions can be made here.

The Fellowship of the Ring is 20 years old this year, and 2021 has seen some interesting Lord of the Rings news arrive. It was revealed that Peter Jackson has been pressured to kill of a Hobbit in the films, and a Soviet adaptation of The Lord of the Rings resurfaced after 30 years. As for future projects, Amazon is currently producing a Lord of the Rings prequel series.
