They come in and buy up dying company's patents or partner up with companies who hold patents but do not have the funds for a lawsuit and they use their cash to front dozens to tens of THOUSANDS of shakedown letters (In this case of Fontem, 89 shakedowns) that say:
"Hi, you are infringing upon our patents "X", "XX", and "XXX" and you will either pay us "Y" amount of money right now or If you do not pay us "Y" amount of money then we will have no choice but to take legal action to the sum of "Z" (Around 10 to 100 times more then "Y") amount of money.
Most companies can't afford to risk spending "Z" if they lose in court so they let the patent troll extort them for "Y".
